Real Madrid, Barcelona Copa Del Rey Semifinal: 1st Leg Draw With Fabregas, Varane Goals (VIDEO)

By Charlie Scott, Goal.com

The shares were spoiled in a pulsating Clasico at the Santiago Bernabeu, as a thumping late header from Raphael Varane earned?Real Madrid a 1-1 draw in the first leg of its Copa del Rey semifinal against Barcelona.

The Catalan side looked to have put one foot in the final as it led late on after Cesc Fabregas had put the club up 1-0 with a well-taken goal shortly after the break, only for Madrid's young defender Varane to secure the home team a draw in the 81st minute.

Madrid was without five first-team players for its fourth Clasico of the season, as Iker Casillas and Pepe missed out because of injury, while the likes of Sergio Ramos, Fabio Coentrao and Angel Di Maria were all absent through suspension. Barcelona, meanwhile, named a full-strength starting lineup.

For all their missing men it was los Blancos that made the brighter start of the two sides. Within a minute of kickoff Ronaldo was charging at the heart of the Barcelona defense, and his driving run towards goal was only stopped by a cynical challenge from Gerard Pique. The Portuguese attacker took the set piece himself and proceeded to force Pinto into making a fine diving stop.

In the 12th minute a moment of mastery from Andres Iniesta created a chance for the overlapping Jordi Alba, but the Barcelona left back could only volley wide of Diego Lopez's goal after bursting through the Madrid defense and connecting with Iniesta's effortless chipped pass.

Moments after being booked for a mistimed challenge on Cesc Fabregas, Ricardo Carvalho bundled into Iniesta 25 yards from goal, and from the resulting free kick Xavi came within inches of giving Barcelona the lead, as his devilish curling effort rattled the crossbar with Lopez beaten.

Carvalho then nearly supplied an assist for Barcelona when his tame back-pass allowed Messi to steal the ball and tee up Xavi inside the Madrid box. The Barcelona midfielder arrowed a shot towards the bottom left corner but Madrid's young center back Varane was there on the line to brilliantly hack Xavi's goal-bound strike away from danger.

On the half-hour mark, Karim Benzema nearly scored for the home side when he found space in behind the Barcelona backline to meet Jose Callejon's superb pass and send a volley crashing into the side-netting from a tight angle.

Somehow, a frantic opening first half ended 0-0 despite an avalanche of chances being created by two teams putting clear emphasis on attack rather than defense.

Madrid mimicked its strong start to the first half after the break and fashioned a chance after just 40 seconds of the second period - Benzema hammering a shot over 18 yards from goal.

Despite its pressure, Madrid found itself a goal behind in the 50th minute when Fabregas clinically side-footed the ball past Lopez after being played in by Messi. Just a single touch was needed by Messi to both dispossess Xabi Alonso and play a weighted through ball into the path of Fabregas, with the former Arsenal captain producing a cool finish to give the Catalan side a 1-0 lead.

Then, if not for a sumptuously timed challenge from Varane, Fabregas could well have given Barcelona a two-goal lead. The Frenchman's tackle on his opponent brought Jose Mourinho to his feet, and prompted the coach to make an immediate change with his team on the back foot - introducing Luka Modric for Callejon.

Ronaldo then missed a glorious opportunity to head Madrid level from close range, but he could not test Pinto after connecting with Essien's teasing cross from the right.

Pique, perhaps not to be outshone by Varane up the other end, then produced an equally brilliant tackle on Ronaldo as the Portugal international shaped to send a shot goalwards inside the Barcelona penalty area.

With Barcelona seemingly set to hold out for the win, up popped Varane in the 81st minute to rise highest and send an emphatic header past Pinto from Mesut Ozil's free kick to make it 1-1 and set up an enticing second leg at Camp Nou on Feb. 26.

Tuesday Playlist: Raising Hope Wedding, Damon's Kimmel Replay, NCIS Flashback

We knew it wouldn't be all grins and giggles when three networks decided to stake out comedy ground on Tuesdays this season, cannibalizing the audience with too much of a quirky thing. Sure enough, the laughter ended last week for two of the night's more offbeat sitcoms: Fox's Ben and Kate and ABC's Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23, both abruptly if not unexpectedly yanked from the schedule.

If there's an upside, it's that we get more to love, at least for now, of Fox's underappreciated Raising Hope (8/7), now airing back-to-back episodes off and on for several weeks. First up, a major event for the Chance family, and a very funny episode, as Jimmy and Sabrina's wedding day finally arrives, captured in an awfully familiar mock-documentary style as a knowing homage to Modern Family (from the same studio). Burt, who has always been convinced their wacky life must be part of a hidden-camera reality show, is especially delighted, but everyone participates with asides delivered straight into the camera as inevitable complications threaten to derail the happy occasion. One snafu involves Maw Maw's past with the snippy reverend (Leslie Jordan), while another involves an unwelcome interloper whose identity can't be spoiled. The second episode (not available for review) sends the newlyweds on a road trip to Hollywood for a taping of little Hope's favorite show, Yo Zappa Do.

The foolishness continues on Fox's Tuesday anchor New Girl (9/8c) as Nick becomes unusually attached to a coat designed for women, which he wears on a "band of brothers" night out with his restless bachelor roomies - leaving Jess once again the odd girl out, doing a nutty variation on Home Alone antics until the guys come back to rescue her, leading to some dynamics likely to get the show's "shippers" buzzing. ... Remember back when The Office was still The Office, and Kelly Kapoor had such a thing for office hottie Ryan? In a reunion on Fox's The Mindy Project (9:30/8:30c) that was bound to happen, Mindy Kaling's romantic-obsessive Mindy is sure she's finally found "the one," once again played by B.J. Novak.

On ABC, the vacancy in Apartment 23 is filled by back-to-back episodes of Happy Endings (9/8c) on a pivotal night in which Penny gets the proposal she's been hoping for from Pete (Nick Zano), which sends the crew to a wedding expo in the second half-hour. ... On NBC, holding steady with its new comedies, Ryan's attempts to date Simone (Piper Perabo) are foiled by repeated hauntings from his late wife on Go On (9/8c). And John Stamos returns to The New Normal (9:30/8:30c), now proved to be most definitely straight, thus becoming the object of Nana's desire, while dad-to-be Bryan becomes obsessed with the issue of breastfeeding their babe. ... On Cougar Town (TBS, 10/9c), the cul-de-sac crew becomes hilariously unhinged when neighborhood nebbish Tom begins squiring a feisty new girlfriend (Ali Wentworth).

NOT SO LATE NIGHT: If you missed Matt Damon getting his mock revenge on longtime nemesis Jimmy Kimmel by taking over Jimmy Kimmel Live last Thursday night, you won't have to stay up so late for the replay of this chaotically funny hour. ABC is giving their star (even though bound and gagged for the entire episode) prime-time exposure with a special prime-time encore of the "Jimmy Kimmel Sucks" edition (10/9c), in which Damon replaces the bandleader with Sheryl Crow, enlists a very willing Andy Garcia to be his Guillermo and gets monologue help from Robin Williams while a crestfallen Ben Affleck looks on from the cue-card position ("I never wanted it to end up this way"). Damon crowds his couch with top-shelf talent, several of whom declare they've never been on Kimmel before (although a few climb on top of him), and caps the night with an appearance by Kimmel's ex, Sarah Silverman, who once so famously "f---ed" Damon in the classic music video. For further enjoyment, check out Michael Schneider's story on how this elaborate stunt came to be.

New to the late-night arena: MTV's Nikki & Sara Live (11/10c) a weekly half-hour comedy/talk hybrid based on Nikki Glaser and Sara Schaefer's podcast "You Had to Be There." First guest: Ke$ha.

From low comedy to high drama ... FX's Justified (10/9c) is really burning through the subplots. Having "handled" Reverend Billy with a venomous snake last week, Boyd Crowder now turns his attention to repentant tramp Ellen May, who has wandered back "home" from salvation but may be harboring too many secrets to be trusted. And where's Raylan? Teaming with Rachel to track down sexy bartender Lindsay, who took off with the "goodly sum" of cash from his underwear drawer and is back on the road with her bruiser of a husband like a penny-ante version of Bonnie and Clyde. There will be shooting before it's over, but it's funnier than it sounds.

Flashback time for fan favorite Abby (Pauley Perrette) on CBS' megahit NCIS (8/7c), as a Marine's car accident triggers traumatic memories from her youth. ... On CBS' Vegas (10/9c), Jack (Jason O'Mara) must have known he was playing with fire by courting mobster's daughter Mia (Sarah Jones), but now it's time to face her dad's wrath. ... USA Network's White Collar (10/9c) continues its investigation into the corrupt cop network that framed Neal's father and ruined his family, a trail that leads to a senator and a shady real-estate developer.

THE TUESDAY GUIDE: Daytime Emmy winner Steve Burton, formerly of General Hospital, leaps to CBS' The Young and the Restless (check tvguide.com listings), arriving in Genoa City as an ex-soldier with, what else, a secret. ... PBS' entertaining Pioneers of Television (check tvguide.com listings) continues its winter run with a look back at classic TV "Superheroes," from '50s and '60s boomer icons Superman and Batman to cult faves like Wonder Woman and The Incredible Hulk. The episode includes an interview with The Greatest American Hero's Robert Culp filmed shortly before his death in 2010. ... Tune in for the creativity on Syfy's Face Off (9/8c) as the monster-makers tackle a demon challenge that blows from hot to cold, and stay for the impressively detailed but opinionated judging, including Glenn Hetrick's unforgettable critique: "It punches you in the face with how bad it sucks." ... For history buffs, PBS' American Experience presents a warts-and-all profile of industrialist Henry Ford (check tvguide.com listings). ... Last year's astoundingly popular History miniseries about the infamous family feud between the Hatfields and McCoys revealed what a powerful grip that story still has on the nation's imagination. National Geographic Channel's Diggers (10/9c) returns to the presumed site of the families' final showdown in rural Kentucky to seek 125-year-old artifacts.

TSX little changed as RIM losses offset gold gains

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada's main stock index was little changed on Wednesday as gains made by gold stocks following weak U.S. growth data were kept in check by a fall in Research In Motion Ltd after it released its long-awaited BlackBerry 10 devices.

Data showed the U.S. economy unexpectedly contracted in the fourth quarter, suffering its first decline since the recession ended more than three years ago as businesses scaled back on restocking and government spending plunged.

While this curtailed the appetite for equities, it spurred demand for gold. Gold prices climbed 1 percent, helping the materials sector gain 1.1 percent and lead the market higher.

However, the market eased from a near 18-month high it hit earlier in the session after RIM reversed early gains. The stock slid 4.5 percent to C$15.01.

The BlackBerry maker kicked off a string of global launch parties for a long-delayed line of smartphones it says will put it on the comeback trail in a market it once dominated.

"RIM is coming out with the BlackBerry 10 dog-and-pony show. People are hoping, wishing and praying for a successful launch," said Irwin Michael, portfolio manager at ABC Funds.

The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index <.gsptse> was down 4.34 points, or 0.03 percent, at 12,826.22. The index earlier in the session hit 12,895.28, its highest since August 2, 2011.

Seven of the 10 main sectors on the index declined.

Goldcorp Inc added 1.9 percent to C$36.78, and Barrick Gold Corp gained 1.2 percent to C$33.27.

"People are reticent to buy stocks. They feel more comfortable with the hard commodity," Michael said.

A decline in financials, down 0.2 percent, and industrials, which slipped 0.7 percent, also weighed on the market.

UFC on Fox 6?s Three Stars: Anthony Pettis, Ricardo Lamas and T.J. Grant

In the home of the 6-0 Chicago Blackhawks, the UFC had it's sixth showing on Fox. In hockey's tradition, here are the Three Stars from the card.

No. 1 star -- Anthony Pettis: Once upon a time, Pettis was the WEC champion and had a shot at the UFC lightweight title. But then Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard fought to a draw and required a rematch, and Pettis lost to Clay Guida. But with a nasty liver kick that took out Donald Cerrone, Pettis showed he was still worthy of that title shot.

No. 2 star -- Ricardo Lamas: Speaking of title shots, Lamas made a convincing case on Saturday night for the featherweight belt. He used punishing ground and pound to make Erik Koch's face explode on the way to a TKO. Lamas has four wins in a row, and has earned the shot to be the next fighter with a shot at the featherweight belt after this weekend's fight between Edgar and champion Jose Aldo.

No. 3 star -- T.J. Grant: The lightweight division is stacked, but Grant's showing on Saturday night showed another fighter creeping into the top ranks. He elbowed his way to a win over Matt Wiman.

These are Cagewriter's Three Stars. Who are yours? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Is It Time To Cut Back On Social Media? - Business Insider

Social Media Insights is a new daily newsletter from Business Insider that collects and delivers the top social media news first thing every morning. You can sign up to receive Social Media Insights here or at the bottom of this post.

It's Time To Cut Back On Social Media (Harvard Business Review)
It has become increasingly clear that with the proliferation of new platforms, no person or company can become the master of them all. Nor should they. The harder decision is figuring out which ones you should prioritize, and which ones you should scrap. Establishing ROI has always been the holy grail of social media. We may still have a ways to go before we can quantify its objective, dollars-and-cents impact. But even anecdotally, you probably have some good operating theories. For instance, if you target women, Pinterest is a great bet; if it's males, Google+ is currently their stomping ground. And blogging is the best way to demonstrate true content mastery and thought leadership. It's all about pruning and focusing on the platforms that have the most impact.

What Are Your Employees Saying On Social Media? (Social Media Today)
There have been numerous cases of employees commenting on undesirable workplace culture. Professionals understand that there are limitations, but they are also tempted by the freedom of social media. If companies truly wish to make social media work for them, they?ve got to start internally, and educate employees on what their role should be in building credibility and enforcing guidelines of what people outside the company should know, and what should be kept locked inside the office?s shining treasure chest of organizational secrets.

Google+ Overtakes Twitter, Heads For Facebook (Trendstream via Forbes)
U.K. market research firm Trendstream updated its Global Web Index this week, showing that Google+ is now the second-largest social network in terms of active users. YouTube, included for the first time in the index, is now third. The report estimates Facebook?s active users in December 2012 at 693 million, compared to 343 million for Google+.

There is obviously significant overlap between Google+ and YouTube in terms of users, so those two numbers cannot merely be added up for a total. But if all active YouTube users become active Google+ users, it would likely add a significant amount to those 343 million.

Women Use Social Media To Boost Influence At The World Economic Forum (KPMG)
Data from KPMG shows that women delegates are playing an increasingly prominent role in the public discussion at the World Economic Forum (WEF). While only about 17 percent of WEF delegates in Davos are women, they have accounted for more than a third of Davos delegate social media activity. Analysis of delegates' Twitter activity shows that on day one of the Davos meeting, delegates sent 2,376 tweets, of which 784 were from female attendees. KPMG's research also highlighted the growing involvement of the general public in the online debate, with a 31 percent increase in retweets, showing greater engagement with the discussions emanating from Davos.

SV Angel Buys $30 Million Of Pinterest In Secondary Sale (TechCrunch)
Last week, an SEC filing showed a new $30 million raise by SV Angel, for a fund called SV Angel-III Growth P. This $30 million is a Special Purpose Vehicle for SV Angel, specifically reserved to buy secondary shares in Pinterest.TechCrunch confirmed with SV Angel co-founder David Lee that this is indeed the case. The $30 million secondary investment, which closed last year, was at the same $1.5 billion valuation at which Rakuten made its investment in Pinterest last year. Most of the $30 million will go towards liquidity of early outside investors, and amounts to roughly 2 percent of the startup at the current valuation.

Facebook Shows Large Influence On Social TV (eMarketer)
According to a September 2012 survey of U.S. Internet users conducted by Nielsen for the Cable & Telecommunications Association for Marketing (CTAM), people still most often talk about TV shows while in the same room, face-to-face, or over the phone.

Among online channels, Facebook had the greatest influence on getting people to watch a show? 46 percent said they picked up a show as a result of the social network. That was followed by Twitter (14 percent), the websites of TV shows (9 percent) and then forums or discussion boards (8 percent).

?

TV watchers also showed a predilection for talking about shows? either in person, online or over the phone? after the show aired. About seven in 10 respondents talked about a show while it was on-air, while three-quarters did so right after its conclusion. The day after a show was broadcast, the percentage of people chatting about a show ramped up to 83 percent.

Here Are The 10 Social Tools You Need (HR Magazine)
Workplace applications of collaborative social tools are becoming far more explicit and, coupled with the rise in more enterprise-oriented platforms, are providing companies with an opportunity to add value. Here are the top ten:

 1. Crowdsourcing
 2. Social learning
 3. Enterprise social networks
 4. Microblogging
 5. Social performance management
 6. Online groups / Communities of interest
 7. Mobile applications
 8. Online presentation sharing
 9. New-generation video conferencing
 10. Online task management

Are you fed up of the social yet? Hopefully not, because the trend for putting the word social in front of everything shows no sign of abating.

Brands Who Ignore Their Fans (socialbakers)
In today?s social media world, most brands are aware that it?s as important to respond to their customers online, as it is offline. In terms of the mobile phone manufacturer industry, here are some examples of brands that have a tremendous presence on Facebook but could handle their customer relations much better:

 • LG Mobile proved to be the least socially devoted, earning a fan base of over 1 million with a zero percent response rate.
 • Blackberry has nearly 12 million Facebook fans, however only earned a 1.46 percent response rate, answering 73 questions out of the over 5,000 posted.
 • Nokia earned a 4.36 percent response rate.
 • HTC earned an 24.94 percent response rate, with a a fan base of 2.5 million.

Social media, by definition, is a natural environment for fans (customers) to interact. Not responding to customers is as arrogant as hanging up the phone on them.

The Impact Of Twitter On 5 Major Brands (Wishpond via MediaBistro)
Social media has changed the retail business. This infographic takes a closer look at the impact of Twitter on five major brands? LG, Virgin America, Cadbury, Cirque Du Soleil and Porsche:

Thanks to platforms such as Twitter and Facebook, retail brands of all shapes and sizes can build highly engaged audiences that can help them raise awareness and drive sales.

Four killed, many hurt at funerals in Egypt port city

CAIRO (Reuters) - Three people were shot dead and hundreds were injured in Egypt's Port Said on Sunday during the funerals of 33 protesters killed at the weekend, part of a wave of violence piling pressure on Islamist President Mohamed Mursi.

State television said Mursi would address the nation later on Sunday. Forty-five people have been killed in demonstrations around the country since Thursday and his opponents have called for more protests on Monday.

Port Said's head of hospitals, Abdel Rahman Farag, told Reuters an 18-year-old man and two other people died from gunshot wounds on Sunday. More than 416 people suffered from teargas inhalation, while 17 were wounded by gunshots, he said.

As coffins were carried through the streets earlier, some in the crowd chanted for revenge or shouted anti-Mursi slogans. "Our soul and blood, we sacrifice to Port Said," they said.

Gunshots had killed many of the 33 who died on Saturday when residents went on the rampage after a court sentenced 21 people, mostly from the Mediterranean port, to death for their role in deadly soccer violence at a stadium there last year.

A military source said many people in Port Said, which lies next to the increasingly lawless Sinai Peninsula, possess guns. But it was not clear who was behind the deaths and injuries.

In Cairo, police fired teargas at dozens of stone-throwing protesters in a fourth day of clashes over what demonstrators there and in other cities say is a power grab by Islamists two years after Hosni Mubarak was overthrown.

The protesters accuse Mursi, elected in June with the support of his Muslim Brotherhood group, of betraying the democratic goals of the revolution. Most of the deaths since Thursday were in Port Said and Suez, both cities where the army has now been deployed.

The violence adds to the daunting task facing Mursi as he tries to fix a beleaguered economy and cool tempers before a parliamentary election expected in the next few months which is supposed to cement Egypt's transition to democracy.

It has exposed a deep rift in the nation. Liberals and other opponents accuse Mursi of failing to deliver on economic promises and say he has not lived up to pledges to represent all Egyptians. His backers say the opposition is seeking to topple Egypt's first freely elected leader by undemocratic means.

Although Sunday's violence was less severe than the previous two days, Mursi may have little respite. The opposition Popular Current and other groups have called for more protests on Monday to mark what was one of the bloodiest days of the 2011 uprising.

The Popular Current, led by leftist Hamdeen Sabahy, said it "denounces the state of silence of the presidency and the government during the sad events that the country went through the past 48 hours".

"BLOOD BEING SPILT"

On a bridge close to Tahrir Square, youths hurled stones at police in riot gear who fired teargas to push them back towards the square, the cauldron of the uprising that erupted on January 25, 2011 and toppled Mubarak 18 days later.

"None of the revolution's goals have been realized," said Mohamed Sami, a protester in Cairo's Tahrir Square on Sunday.

"Prices are going up. The blood of Egyptians is being spilt in the streets because of neglect and corruption and because the Muslim Brotherhood is ruling Egypt for their own interests."

Clashes also erupted in other streets near the square. The U.S. and British embassies, both close to Tahrir, said they were closed for public business on Sunday, normally a working day.

The army, Egypt's interim ruler until Mursi's election, was sent back onto the streets to restore order in Port Said and Suez, which both lie on the Suez canal. In Suez, at least eight people were killed in clashes with police.

Egypt's defense minister who also heads the army, Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, called for the nation to stand together and said the military would not prevent peaceful protests. But he called on demonstrators to protect public property.

Many ordinary Egyptians are frustrated by the regular escalations that have hurt the economy and their livelihoods.

"They are not revolutionaries protesting," said taxi driver Kamal Hassan, 30, referring to those gathered in Tahrir. "They are thugs destroying the country."

CALL FOR DIALOGUE

The National Defence Council, headed by Mursi, called on Saturday for national dialogue to discuss political differences.

That offer has been cautiously welcomed by the opposition National Salvation Front. But the coalition has demanded a clear agenda and guarantees that any agreements will be implemented.

The Front, formed late last year when Mursi provoked protests and violence by expanding his powers and driving through an Islamist-tinged constitution, has threatened to boycott the parliamentary poll and call for more protests if its demands are not met, including for an early presidential vote.

Egypt's transition has been blighted from the outset by political rows and turbulence on the streets that have driven investors out and kept many tourists away. Its currency, the pound, has steadily weakened against the dollar.

The Port Said clashes erupted after a judge sentenced 21 men to death for involvement in 74 deaths at a soccer match on February 1, 2012 between Cairo's Al Ahly club and the local al-Masri team. Many of the victims were fans of the visiting team.

There were 73 defendants in the case. Those not sentenced on Saturday will face a verdict on March 9, the judge said.

Al Ahly fans cheered the verdict after threatening action if the death penalty was not meted out. But Port Said residents were furious that people from their city were held responsible.

UK: Reports of threat against Tripoli embassy

LONDON (AP) ? Britain's Foreign Office says it is aware of reports about a potential threat against the U.K. embassy in Tripoli, the capital of Libya.

The reports come less than a week after the British government joined Germany, the Netherlands and Canada in urging their citizens in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi to evacuate in response to what was described as an imminent threat to Westerners.

The Foreign Office said Monday it is working closely with the Libyan government in response to reports of a potential threat against its embassy in Tripoli.

Britain has not changed its travel advice, which recommends against all but essential travel to Tripoli.

fumiyokohinata: Shopping and Product Reviews: When To Begin ...

Have you been asking yourself when to begin with using anti aging cream lately? If you have, you are probably in your 20s or 30s and are thinking if you should begin safety actions before those first experience lines appear. It might also be that you are not sure what anti aging items you should use, too.

If that's the situation, let me discuss some of my healthy epidermis care guidance and perhaps we can get some of those concerns eliminated.

First let's get one factor clear: there is no particular age or time frame you should definitely begin using anti aging items. It all relies on your genetics, way of life, choices and also on your kind of epidermis. Some individuals have excellent genetics and look like youngsters into their 40s, the relax of us must manage what we eat strategy, work out program and remain non-smokers to arrive at the same impact (and even then there's no guarantee). Those who greasy epidermis or a few excess weight usually look young for more time, but slimmer individuals and dry-skinned individuals need to begin actions against the ravages of time previously.

So when do you individually need to begin with using anti aging cream? My healthy epidermis care guidance is to begin with when the first experience lines begin to appear, usually around the sight or oral cavity. Based on the aspects detailed above, this could be when you are 21, or it could be when you are 31 or even mature. Keep an eye on your experience and take activity as soon as you see the first wrinkles-in-the-making.

Some individuals suggest getting safety actions before any ravages of time are noticeable, but in my perspective this is not necessary.

But what anti aging items should I use, you ask. Again, you need to look at yourself and your epidermis to choose. Most individuals can begin with an anti aging day cream and a experience clean with some anti aging advantages. But if you have dry epidermis, you might want to use an anti aging evening cream right away. Using covers every few several weeks is also a wise decision - at first you can use any (all-natural) covers and later on shift to ones with more juvenating substances.

Ryan says GOP need to pick its fights with Obama

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Rep. Paul Ryan said Saturday that Republicans need to stick together and pick their fights during President Barack Obama's second term, rejecting some White House proposals outright and trying to infuse others with conservative principles.

In a speech to conservatives, the GOP's 2012 vice presidential nominee said Obama would attempt to divide Republicans but that the party must avoid internal squabbles as it seeks to rebound from a second straight presidential loss.

"We can't get rattled. We won't play the villain in his morality plays. We have to stay united," Ryan said at the National Review Institute event. "We have to show that if given the chance, we can govern. We have better ideas."

The Wisconsin congressman outlined a pragmatic approach for a party dealing with last November's election defeats and trying to determine whether to oppose Obama's agenda at every turn or shape his proposals with conservative principles.

With a surging minority population altering the electorate, Republican leaders have discussed the need to attract more women and Hispanics while at the same time standing firm to the values that unite conservatives.

The party's future was a major theme during the three-day meeting of conservatives activists, who expected to hear from Govs. Scott Walker of Wisconsin, Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, Bob McDonnell of Virginia, and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas.

Ryan rejected the notion that Republicans were "in the wilderness," noting that the party controls the House and most statehouses. But he said Obama's victory over Mitt Romney meant that Republicans would need to recalibrate their approach to deal with the new political realities.

"If we want to promote conservatism, we'll need to use every tool at our disposal," Ryan said. "Sometimes, we will have to reject the president's proposals ? that time may come more than once. And sometimes we'll have to make them better." He said Republicans should have two main goals for the next four years, namely "to mitigate bad policies" and "to advance good policy wherever we can."

Ryan acknowledged that "we all didn't see eye to eye" on the recent "fiscal cliff" vote to deal with a combination of spending cuts and higher taxes that were set to take effect at the start of the year. He defended his support for the bill, saying it was the only way to avoid sweeping tax increases and prevent the economy from going into a free-fall.

As chairman of the House Budget Committee, Ryan said Republicans needed to guard against a debt crisis for the country that would undermine the economy. He said he would promote changes to Medicare and Medicaid and would propose a budget "that will balance and pay down the debt."

But November's election results still linger. Ryan said he was "disappointed" by the outcome, saying he was "looking forward to taking on the big challenges" while living at the vice president's residence. "My kids were looking forward to having a pool," he joked.

John Kerry: Global climate change is a 'life-threatening issue'

John Kerry said the US must play a key role in slowing the effects of climate change in his confirmation hearing Thursday. Climate change has been a central focus of Sen. John Kerry's political career.

Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass. listens as he testifies on Capitol Hill in Washington, Thursday. John Kerry told fellow senators he would be a "passionate advocate" on slowing climate change if confirmed as secretary of state.

Calling global climate change a "life-threatening issue," Secretary of State nomineeJohn?Kerry?said Thursday that the United States must play a key role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming.

Kerry, a Massachusetts Democrat, said at his confirmation hearing that the U.S. should pursue policies to boost clean energy and energy efficiency. In his state and others, such as California, "the fastest growing sector of our economy is clean energy,"?Kerry?said. "It's a job creator."

Kerry, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has made climate change a central focus of his Senate career and led a failed effort in the Senate for a climate change bill in 2010.

Kerry?told fellow senators he would be a "passionate advocate" on the issue if confirmed as secretary of state, "not based on ideology but based on facts, based on science. And I hope to sit with all of you and convince you that this $6 trillion (energy) market is worth millions of American jobs and leadership, and we better go after it."

Failing to deal with climate change was more of a risk than addressing it head-on,?Kerry?said, citing damage caused by Superstorm Sandy, drought and wildfires. Congress is expected to approve more $50 billion in disaster relief for Sandy victims alone. The storm pounded Northeastern states in late October and has been blamed for 140 deaths.

"If we can't see the downside of spending that money" as a short-term fix after a disaster "and risking lives for all the changes that are taking place ? to agriculture, to our communities, the ocean and so forth, we're ignoring what science is telling us,"?Kerry?said.

On a related issue,?Kerry?said he has made no decision about the Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada. Environmental groups have been pressuring the Obama administration to reject the pipeline, saying it would carry "dirty oil" that contributes to global warming.

Kerry?said a review process is well underway at the State Department. The department has jurisdiction over the pipeline because it crosses an international border.

"It will not be long before that comes across my desk,"?Kerry?said. "And at that time, I'll make the appropriate judgments about it."

Absent but omnipresent, Chavez a powerful symbol

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? While Venezuela's sick president recuperates from surgery behind closed doors in Cuba, at home he is more visible than ever.

An iconic block image of his eyes look out from murals lining the streets of Caracas, his portrait appears on T-shirts sported by followers, and on television he can be seen booming "I am a nation!"

Though still alive, Chavez is being inducted into a pantheon of deified legends such as Evita Peron and Ernesto "Che" Guevara.

The cult of personality that Chavez long nurtured has been flourishing with even greater force in his absence as he confronts an increasingly difficult struggle against the mysterious cancer that afflicts him.

One woman at a pro-government demonstration on Wednesday held a portrait photo of Chavez next to an image of Jesus. New murals showing only the president's eyes have appeared on city walls along with a new slogan, "I am Chavez."

The iconic eyes-only design sends a message that he is always watching and still with his adoring constituents. Many credit him with easing their poverty and expanding public services. To them, it does not matter that Venezuela suffers from 20 percent inflation, that the oil-producing nation is often short on cooking oil and sugar, that it has one of the world's highest murder rates, that the president will not divulge the details of his cancer.

"I am Chavez!" his supporters yell at the rallies in his honor. "We're all Chavez!" the crowds shout in unison.

Filling the void of Chavez's 6-week absence following a fourth surgery in Cuba, the government has been churning out a steady stream of emotional images, slogans and Chavez sound bites that appear poised to solidify Chavez's legacy as a messianic savior of the poor.

In newspapers, the government has been running one ad showing a photo of the president superimposed on a mosaic of smiling faces of Venezuelans: Chavez men, Chavez women and Chavez children of all ages.

Juan Pablo Lupi, a Latin American literature scholar, sees parallels with the way Evita Peron became an enduring political symbol in Argentina, and the way "Che" became a revolutionary icon after his death. In the case of Chavez, he said, "this has been very well-staged, all this process of myth-making and appealing to the feelings and religious sentiment of the people. This is something that is quasi-religious."

Lupi, a Venezuelan associate professor at the University of California Santa Barbara, said he expects Chavismo to go on without Chavez. "The myth is already there, and all this has been very, very well-crafted."

The connections between Chavez and Jesus are surfacing more often, having begun with Chavez himself praying to God on television for more time, and repeatedly kissing a crucifix.

In one television spot, a beaming Chavez hugs children while a singer croons: "Chavez is pure and noble love." And for block after block in downtown Caracas, lampposts are festooned with new banners showing a smiling, healthy Chavez with the words "We love you!"

Daisy Castillo, who studies law at a free university established by Chavez, joined Wednesday's demonstration, and says she, like many other Chavistas, is praying for him.

"''There has never before been a president like our Comandante Chavez," she said.

Fidel Castro long tried to avoid the trappings of a cult of personality in Cuba, sharply limiting public presentations of his image. But there is plenty of precedent elsewhere for displays of presidential imagery, with leaders such as Saddam Hussein in Iraq, Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua, the late Kim Jong Il in North Korea -- not to mention Mao Zedong and Josef Stalin.

In Venezuela, the relentless omnipresence of a missing leader is a way to reinforce his party, said Juan Carlos Bertorelli, creative director at a marketing company in Caracas that focuses on branding.

"Now that he's not here physically or in voice at this time, the people who are maintaining the structure of his party," he said, "are trying to maintain a presence that legitimizes them."

NYC mayor says Latino group has 'sold its soul' over drinks issue

NEW YORK ?? Mayor Michael Bloomberg says the Hispanic Federation has ?sold its soul? by joining a court fight against New York City?s size limit on sugary drinks.

On his weekly WOR Radio show Friday, Bloomberg also criticized the NAACP?s New York state branch. That group also is involved in the effort to block the rule from taking effect on March 12.

The groups say the measure will hurt minority-owned businesses while doing little to curb obesity.

?The Hispanic Federation has been a leader in advocating for increased healthy living and fitness opportunities for more than a decade and has organized annual health and fitness community events to directly combat obesity and other health issues impacting New York?s Latino community,? said Jos? Calderon, President of the Hispanic Federation, in a statement.??We believe in a comprehensive attack on New York?s obesity crisis that stresses public school physical and health education and community wellness programs. Banning large sugary drinks in a selective fashion with tons of loopholes will do little to address obesity in the Latino community and will unfairly hurt small, minority-owned delis and bodegas. We should work together to solve this crisis by increasing funds for school and community health and fitness programs and by educating and empowering New Yorkers to make healthier lifestyle choices.?

Bloomberg said children who are the most obese tend to live in the city?s minority neighborhoods.

He asked how NAACP officials ?can look at themselves in the mirror knowing they are deliberately hurting? the children?s life expectancy.

Man accused in Zumba case: It wasn't 'love'

Mark Strong is accused of helping a Zumba teacher from a small town run a prostitution ring, but he tells NBC's Katy Tur that even though he had an intimate relationship with teacher Alexis Wright, he never paid for sex or helped her promote prostitution.

By Matthew DeLuca, Staff Writer, NBC News

The man accused of helping a Maine Zumba teacher run a prostitution ring from her dance studio said in an interview with the TODAY show that the two had an ?intimate? but not a ?love? relationship.

Jury selection began Tuesday morning at the York County Superior Courthouse in the case of Mark Strong, 57, an insurance agent who has also worked as a private investigator. Strong has pleaded not guilty to 59 misdemeanor counts of promotion of prostitution and violation of privacy.

Dance instructor Alexis Wright, 30, has pleaded not guilty to charges that include 45 counts of engaging in prostitution, violation of privacy, and conspiring to promote prostitution. Her trial is not expected to start until May.

Justice Nancy Mills and attorneys for Strong and the state quizzed the more than 140 potential jurors called into the courtroom on Tuesday, according to The Associated Press. Potential jurors filled out a 10-page questionnaire and were questioned about their views on pornography, adultery and prostitution.

?You may be shown explicit videos and photographs depicting individuals engaged in graphic sexual acts,? the confidential juror questionnaire asked. ?Would viewing this evidence make it difficult for you to listen to the law and evidence and render a fair and impartial verdict??

The questionnaire also asks jurors if they know or are related to any of 72 potential witnesses who may be called in the course of what is expected to be a weeks-long trial.

Zumba prostitution suspect: I 'did not' pay for sex

In his interview with TODAY, Strong denied paying Wright for sex or helping her promote prostitution.

?I have been harassed. I received threatening phone calls, threatening my life,? Strong said in the TODAY interview.

?This is a long and laborious process, most of which is not public,? defense attorney Daniel Lilley said during a break in jury selection on Tuesday, according to the AP. One-third of the potential jury pool was dismissed Tuesday, and the selection process continued Wednesday.

Joel Page / AP file

Alexis Wright is shown during her arraignment Oct. 9 in Portland, Maine.

Strong?s trial will commence as soon as jury selection is complete, Mary Ann Lynch, director of court information for the York County Superior Courthouse, said in an email to NBC News on Tuesday night.

The saga has kept the seaside town of Kennebunk, Maine, where Wright operated her dance and exercise studio, on edge.

?There?s still some of that puritanical New England left around,? Kennebunk store owner Will Bradford told the AP in October.

Court documents filed by Deputy District Attorney Justina McGettigan on Oct. 18 in the state?s superior court detail materials seized in the discovery process, including a number of computers, cameras and external hard drives.

Talks to strike a plea deal for Strong fell apart last week, the Boston Globe reported.

Melamine tableware may leach chemical: study

(Reuters) - Melamine, a chemical that sickened and killed babies in China when it tainted baby formula, can also leach off tableware and into food, according to a Taiwan study.

But researchers, whose results appeared in JAMA Internal Medicine, warned that their findings don't prove that melamine is harmful to people in the amounts detected when study participants ate hot soup from melamine bowls.

Large doses of melamine, which is used in some types of fertilizer and in resin used to make tableware, killed six babies in China and sent thousands more to the hospital with kidney damage in 2008. In high enough quantities, melamine can cause kidney stones and other kidney problems in adults.

"Melamine tableware may release large amounts of melamine when used to serve high-temperature foods," wrote lead researcher Chia-Fang Wu from Kaohsiung Medical University in Taiwan.

For the study, six people in their 20s ate hot soup for breakfast out of melamine bowls, while another six ate soup from ceramic bowls. Then, the researchers monitored participants' urine for the next twelve hours. Three weeks later, the two groups were reversed.

For the rest of the day, the total melamine excreted in study volunteers' urine was 8.35 micrograms following a melamine bowl breakfast, compared to 1.31 micrograms after breakfast from a ceramic bowl.

The study didn't measure any health effects possibly related to melamine, and it's not clear if those urine levels would lead to any long-term medical problems or if participants' bodies were storing any of the chemical.

Craig Langman, who studies kidney diseases at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, said that while the study raises interesting questions and concerns, it didn't prove anything.

But he also said that research into the chemical's long-term biological effects should continue.

"The babies who were poisoned because of their being young had very low kidney function to begin with," he told Reuters Health. "Clearly, poisoning acutely with this massive overload is different than long-term exposure.

Melamine is approved in the United States for use in the manufacturing of some cooking utensils, tableware, plastics and industrial coatings, among other things. It is likely more common in other countries, including China.

"American exposure from tableware must be astonishingly small, or not at all," Langman added. "(But) because of the Chinese poisoning epidemic, we have to entirely vigilant all the time about our food supply."

Anyone who has a choice might as well avoid buying tableware made with melamine, because it does interact with some acidic foods and in the microwave.

"If you can avoid it, why use it?" he said. SOURCE: http://bit.ly/V2tOYf

The strong binding of gold on electronically modified calcium oxide can now be understood in detail. In a computational study, researchers Jenni Andersin, Janne Nevalaita, Karoliina Honkala and Hannu Hkkinen at the University of Jyvskyl Nanoscience Center have shown how redox chemistry entirely determines the adsorption strength of gold on the modified oxide where one metal atom is replaced with molybdenum. The study was funded by the Academy of Finland.

The research team applied the so-called Born-Haber cycle to analyse how different terms contribute to adsorption energy. The calculations were done at the supercomputers of the CSC IT Center of Science by employing quantum mechanical simulation methods.

In the oxide lattice, the molybdenum atom donates two electrons into the oxide. When a gold atom adsorbs on the oxide surface, a redox reaction takes place. In this process, a third electron transferred by the dopant is gained by gold, and energy is released. By varying the dopant among several transition metal atoms, the researchers found that the amount of energy released linearly correlates with the ability of the dopant to give an electron. The trend can be used to estimate how much a guest atom stabilises gold adsorption without calculating the adsorption energy.

The research results are important for understanding catalyst-support interaction. The results fully support the experimental observation where gold nanoparticles have been seen to form flat structures over modified calcium oxide surfaces. A similar Born-Haber cycle, as applied in this study, can also be employed to analyse oxide-catalysed chemical reactions that follow the redox mechanism.

Catalysts are commonly used by industry, for instance, in the production of fuels, plastics, fertilisers and other similar products. Metal oxide surfaces are widely used as support materials for metal catalysts particles. The binding properties and shape of metal nanoparticles sensitively depend on the interaction between the support and the catalyst. By tuning this interaction, it is possible to affect the number and properties of catalytically active sites, or even create new sites. One way to modify the interaction is to dope the oxide with guest metal atoms that can donate extra electrons into a material.

###

The results of the research team were published in December 2012 in the prestigious chemistry journal Angewandte Chemie: "The Redox Chemistry of Gold with High-Valence Doped Calcium Oxide" (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/anie.201208443/abstract).

Israel's Netanyahu turns focus to Iran after narrow win

Lior Mizrahi / Getty Images

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu waves to supporters at his election campaign headquarters early Wednesday morning in Tel Aviv. Exit polls indicate that Netanyahu was re-elected for a third term and will return to office. Israel had the highest turnout of voters since 1999.

By Alistair Lyon, Reuters

JERUSALEM --?Hawkish Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed victory in Israel's parliamentary election, shrugging off surprise losses to center-left challengers and vowing to stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

However, Tuesday's vote, which also disappointed religiously inspired hardliners, may deflect the premier's focus on confronting Tehran and resisting Palestinian demands as Israel's secular middle-class demanded new attention on domestic issues.

That in turn might draw Netanyahu toward a less fractious relationship with his key ally, U.S. President Barack Obama, who himself embarked on a new term this week with great ambitions.

Interim vote count results on Wednesday showed the Israeli leader's right-wing Likud and the ultra-nationalist Yisrael Beitenu would remain the biggest bloc in the 120-member assembly, but with only 31 seats, 11 fewer than the 42 the two parties held in the last parliament.

That put Netanyahu on course for a third term in office, perhaps leading a hardline coalition that would promote Jewish settlement on occupied land.?

But his weakened showing in the ballot, which he had called nine months early in the hope of a strong mandate for his struggle with Iran, could complicate his efforts to forge an alliance with a stable and substantial majority in parliament.

"I am proud to be your prime minister, and I thank you for giving me the opportunity, for the third time, to lead the state of Israel," the 63-year-old leader told a cheering crowd in the early hours of Wednesday at his campaign headquarters.

Netanyahu said he planned to form as broad a governing coalition as possible, suggesting he would seek partners beyond his traditional ultra-nationalist and religious allies. His first call may be to Yair Lapid, a former television anchorman whose centrist, secular party came from nowhere to second place.

"The first challenge was and remains preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons," Netanyahu said.

Iran denies it is planning to build an atomic bomb, and says Israel, widely believed to have the only nuclear arsenal in the Middle East, is the biggest threat to the region.

Netanyahu views Tehran's nuclear program as a threat to Israel's existence and has stoked international concern by hinting at possible Israeli military action to thwart it.

He has shunted Palestinian peacemaking well down the agenda despite Western concern to keep the quest for a solution alive.?
Wednesday's count forecast an even split between right-wing parties and the centre-left, with each bloc taking 60 of parliament's 120 seats.

Lapid's Yesh Atid (There is a Future) party should have 19 seats, the interim count showed - a stunning result for a newcomer to politics in a field of 32 contending parties.

Lapid won support amongst middle-class, secular voters by promising to resolve a growing housing shortage, abolish military draft exemptions for Jewish seminary students and seek an overhaul of the failing education system.

He urged Netanyahu "to build as broad a government as possible so that we can bring about real change in Israel".

The once dominant Labour party led by Shelly Yachimovich was projected to take third place with 15 seats.?

Opinion polls before the election had predicted an easy win for Netanyahu, although the last ones suggested he would lose some votes to the Jewish Home party, which opposes a Palestinian state and advocates annexing chunks of the occupied West Bank.

Wednesday's interim count gave 11 seats to Jewish Home.

The biggest casualty was the centrist Kadima party, which teetered between a minimum parliamentary showing of 2 seats and political extinction, depending on the final vote tally due later on Wednesday.

Kadima had gained the highest number in the previous election in 2009, although its then leader Tzipi Livni failed to put together a governing coalition.

Official vote results will be announced on January 30. After that, President Shimon Peres is likely to ask Netanyahu, as leader of the biggest bloc in parliament, to try to form a government.

Whatever permutation finally emerges, a Netanyahu-led government is likely to resist any push for a peace deal with the Palestinians that would come anywhere near satisfying the moderates who seek a viable independent state alongside Israel.

Naftali Bennet, high-tech millionaire son of American immigrants who leads the hard-right, pro-settler Jewish Home party, was a likely coalition partner despite his election showing, which was less than surging opinion polls had predicted.

Bennet, who advocates annexing West Bank land to Israel, told cheering supporters: "There is only one truth and it is simple. The Land of Israel belongs to the people of Israel."

Britain warned Israel on Tuesday it was losing international support, saying Jewish settlement expansion had almost killed off prospects for a two-state solution.

U.S.-brokered peace talks broke down in 2010 amid mutual acrimony. Since then Israel has accelerated construction in the West Bank and east Jerusalem - land the Palestinians want for their future state - much to the anger of Western partners.
