OS X Isn't as Secure as Everyone Claims It Is [Apple]

For the past decade or so, many have been quick to argue about how much more secure, stable and virus-free OS X is than Windows. But in light of the Flashback malware, many are reconsidering that stance. Trend Micro, a long time developer of anti-virus and anti-malware software, put together a report of virus trends, and In it, they cite security firm Mitre, who claim that OS X had more reported vulnerabilities than anyone else. Steve Harvey tells moviegoers how to "Think Like a Man"

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Comedian Steve Harvey is a veteran of stand-up comedy and television with programs like his sitcom "The Steve Harvey Show" and the game show "Family Feud," which he currently hosts.

This Friday, his 2009 bestselling, non-fiction book "Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man: What Men Really Think About Love, Relationships, Intimacy, and Commitment" gets the big screen treatment in comedy film, "Think Like a Man."

With an all-star cast including Gabrielle Union, Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy, Romany Malco, hip-hop singer Chris Brown and Oscar nominated actress Taraji P. Henson, the film follows four couples, each of whom have their own relationship issues. When the women start reading Harvey's book in order to improve things, the men get wind of it and try to turn the tables.

Harvey, who executive produces the film and has a small role as himself, sat down with Reuters to talk about it, his upcoming syndicated daytime talk show and his dreams of becoming a motivational speaker.

Q: When you wrote this book, did you ever think it had the makings of a feature film?

A: "The possibility of it becoming a movie never even entered my mind. Not for a millisecond. When I wrote the book, my goal was to make the New York Times bestseller list. That was it. I had no idea the book would be as successful as it was."

Q: Once development began on the film, as executive producer, what kind of input did you have?

A: "I thought you've got to have maybe four of the chapters that gained the most attention - the 90-day rule I thought was a big one - and create some couples around them. The only requirement I had was not to colorize this movie. My book is not about color. It's not about race. This is a movie about how guys think. And it really shows women how guys really think, function and operate."

Q: How challenging was it to adapt a self-help book?

A: "The challenge was not making a mockery of my book because it was meant to empower women. I wrote it with my daughters in mind. It was a challenge to stay true to the principles in the book, to be funny without crossing into slapstick and buffoonery. The writers did an excellent job, and I'm proud of the adaptation."

Q: In the film you appear as yourself, an author and expert. How do you feel about being a relationship expert?

A: "People say, 'He's a relationship expert,' but the expertise that I have is that I'm an expert on how men think. If I was an expert at relationships, I wouldn't be in my third marriage! (laughs). But I got being a man down pat."

Q: Your parents were married for 64 years. With role models like that, how could you have been married three times?

A: "I went about it the wrong way. I never sat down with my father and talked about who to pick, how to pick, how to hang in there when it gets tough. We didn't have a lot of talks about it, so I kept trying. I got way off track a few times. I made a lot of mistakes, but those mistakes got me to this point."

Q: This fall, you'll be hosting your own syndicated talk show. How are you preparing?

A: "That's one of the things that's been on the bucket list, and it's finally come true. I've done years of sitting on (talk show) couches as a guest, and I've always been complimented as being a good guest. I've learned a lot from hosts. It's been a great teaching ground for me to host my own show."

Q: With new talk shows from Ricki Lake, Katie Couric and Jeff Probst among others, how will yours be different?

A: "Here's the deal: there will be no one on television funnier than Steve Harvey. Period. (laughs). That can't happen. I've got all my cash banked on that one! I will be controlling the funny. It's going to be a funny show where you can get a good laugh during the daytime."

Q: What else is on your bucket list?

A: "I would love to be a motivational speaker. That's where I think I'm headed. I've had to learn so many principles of success and memorize so many scriptures. I've been through a lot. I can share with people who come from the bottom, how to get to the top."

Q: What would you say was your low point?

A: "I was homeless. I lived in a car for a couple of years. That was the worst. But nothing was worse than when I was 40 and my mom passed away. My mother was the best person I ever knew. Those were the two lowest points."

Q: Why do you feel compelled to help others?

A: "My mom was a Sunday school teacher for 40 years. She always said 'God blesses you to become a blessing.' You can get a big house on the hill and if you don't show anybody else how to get up on that hill, you'll just be up there by yourself.'"

Q: You've done everything from selling Amway to working as a mailman. What have those jobs taught you?

A: "That success is a process. You've got to do a series of things you're uncomfortable doing in order to get to what you want to do. I've had about 11 different jobs. I didn't care for any of them. But that process taught me how to do uncomfortable things. So as I became successful, when it came time to do uncomfortable things to be successful, I was pretty good at it."

Kinkade products, er, paintings, flying off gallery walls

Rich Pedroncelli / AP

Jeff Nilluka, left, and his son Jamis, 8, view works of baseball paintings at the Thomas Kinkade gallery in the late artist's hometown of Placerville, Calif.

By Bill Briggs, msnbc.com contributor

In life, Thomas Kinkade was easily one of the world?s most commercially successful artists. In death, his popularity has only grown.

?It?s like if you take Christmas and multiply it by 12, or maybe even by 15,? said Linda McLoone, director of the Thomas Kinkade Signature gallery in Port Jefferson, N.Y.? ?It?s good, but it?s sad.?

Since the ?Painter of Light? died April 6 at age 54, rabid Kinkade fans, along with novices, have swarmed? his numerous galleries around the country, purchasing mass-made reproductions and prints of the artist?s works?even faster than his corporate arm can churn them out (more than 500 copies per day).

To be clear: These are not Kinkade originals ? which are rare and can fetch five or six figures. The hot market this week is largely machine-made lithographs?on canvas ? some signed on the back by Kinkade, others hand-highlighted or ?enhanced? by other painters, generally priced at $800 to $1,600.

Retailers say other products ? which include prints, nightlights, coffee mugs and bath lotions ? also are selling briskly.

At the Port Jefferson outlet, buyers waited in three-hour lines to order factory reproductions of paintings with titles such?as ?Beside Still Waters,? ?Mountain Majesty? and ?Sweetheart Cottage III.? More than 100 other would-be buyers clogged the gallery?s voicemail, McLoone said.

?We?re getting inundated,? said Sal Catalfumo, who co-owns five Kinkade galleries in New York and New Jersey.

How much have sales jumped since Kinkade?s brush was silenced?

?I?d prefer not to mention that,? Catalfumo said. ?I don?t want it to look like, because of his dying, we?re benefiting. I?d rather have him not be gone and take away all the money I?ve made this week and instead know that I have a flourishing business for 15 to 25 years.?

Some fine-art appraisers, like Ithaca, N.Y.-based Evan D. Williams, have heard secondhand that some gallery owners ?are doing massive markups? on Kinkade pieces.

?A call Wednesday to the Patrick?s Fine Art, a Thomas Kinkade dealer in Mount Dora, Fla., failed to shed any light on whether retailers have boosted prices.

?It?s selling very well,? the gallery operator, Jimmy Patrick, said of Kinkade?s line, featuring works like light-blazing country cottages and snow-covered churches. ?As far as any other comments, I suggest you go to corporate.?

AP via PR Newswire

An undated photo provided by The Thomas Kinkade Co. shows Kinkade's "Christmas in New York."

Corporate is an apt term for Kinkade?s empire. His paintings became a brand -- feel-good images?that resonated with thousands of mainstream consumers.?At his peak, Kinkade?s products, virtually ignored by serious art critics, were said to generate about $100 million in annual revenue through a chain of franchised galleries.

Corporate officials at Thomas Kinkade Co. in Morgan Hill, Calif., did not respond to msnbc.com?s interview request.

The question now: Will all those people clamoring for and collecting Kinkade reproductions see a profit from their investments? Will the value rise for pieces never touched by Kinkade?

?If somebody were to come to me with one of those embellished prints and ask my professional opinion on selling it, insuring it or donating it, I?m in a tough spot,? said Williams, the appraiser, who does not deal in Kinkades. ?Even though he?s so well known ? and, in some aspects, the most successful artist in history ? he?s got a completely terrible secondary market track record as far as I know.?

And that?s not because the secondary art market frowns on embellished reproductions. Andy Warhol?s reprinted serigraphs gained value after the pop artist?s death.

?I?m not a forecaster, but I don?t see that happening with Kinkade,? Williams said. ?It all goes back to this concept of things being legitimized by the art world, and, yes, it?s all very arbitrary. Is Warhol objectively better than Kinkade? I would think so.?

However, Kinkade prints are hardly worthless, he added.

?This week, I read articles where some gallery owners have said that if something is mass-produced, it?s never worthwhile,? Williams said. ?That?s absolutely wrong. I think that?s a dangerous generalization.?

But when it comes to the future value of Kinkade?s factory-made pieces, it may be the rules of basic economics that ultimately trump art snobbery. In other words, Kinkade Inc. may be hurt by the fact that, for years, it flooded the market with reproductions.

Kinkade?s website lists hundreds of paintings including 31 bridges, 22 churches, 68 cityscapes, 74 cottages and 36 "inspirational? images. Copies are sold through a network of hundreds of galleries, including dozens of ?signature gold? galleries devoted entirely to the artist?s work and ?signature silver? galleries that generally include at least?a Kinkade viewing room.

?Is supply going to outpace demand?? Williams asked. ?Probably.?

It could take months before we know what killed popular artist Thomas Kinkade, the so-called "painter of light," who faced a number of legal and financial problems in recent years. NBC's Mike Taibbi reports.

Stocks recoup losses but rally appears fragile

PARIS (AP) ? Stock markets rallied Wednesday, recouping some of their losses from a day earlier, when fears grew that the U.S. economy was slowing and Europe's debt crisis returning.

The yield, or interest rate, on Spain's benchmark 10-year bond fell back after pushing 6 percent on Tuesday. Analysts warned, however, that the market recovery was uncertain and that the underlying worries remain.

"Markets have eked out modest gains this morning, but sentiment still feels quite fragile in the wake of yesterday's heavy falls," said Ben Critchley, a sales trader at IG Index. "It seems that the weaker jobs report from the U.S. on Friday is being used as the catalyst for a general sell-off, as concerns about the eurozone combine with worries about a weaker U.S. economy."

After several weeks of respite from Europe's debt crisis, the yields on Spanish and Italian bonds have started climbing again recently, indicating that investors aren't convinced they can reduce their debt loads and so are becoming leery of lending to them.

Rising bond yields are at the heart of the continent's crisis since they reflect how expensive it is for countries to borrow money; high borrowing costs have forced three countries ? Greece, Ireland and Portugal ? to seek rescue loans when they could no longer afford to fund themselves.

Analysts warn, however, that rising Spanish and Italian yields are not just more of the same.

"The unfortunate reality here is that Spain is very different to those that have already been bailed out; it's arguably too big to bail," said David White, a trader at Spreadex. "And should the provisions made by the Spanish government, the IMF and the ECB not be enough to either reassure the market or help roll over their debt if required, the volatility seen so far this month is likely to continue."

That volatility was on display Wednesday when European shares surged after the three major indexes all lost more than 2 percent on Tuesday.

In France, the CAC-40 rose 1.1 percent to 3,253.08 while Britain's FTSE gained 0.5 percent to 5,625.75. Germany's DAX jumped 1.1 percent at 6.680.65.

The euro was also climbing, rising 0.4 percent to $1.3135.

Wall Street opened higher, with the Dow gaining 0.8 percent to 12,819.77 and the S&P 500 1.0 percent 1,372.06.

Compounding concerns about a faltering recovery in the U.S. are indications that China's growth is also slowing. The country reports its first quarter gross domestic product results on Friday. Beijing lowered its growth target last month to 7.5 percent.

There are fears that high energy prices could also weigh on growth. On Wednesday, benchmark oil for May delivery was up 69 cents to $101.71 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Earlier in Asia, Tokyo's Nikkei 225 fell 0.8 percent to close at 9,458.74 after dipping earlier in the day to its lowest level in about two months. Hong Kong's Hang Seng dropped 1.1 percent to 20,140.67 and Seoul's Kospi edged 0.1 percent lower to 1,994.41.

Lamar Odom Leaves Dallas Mavericks, Effective Immediately

Lamar Odom's time as a member of the Dallas Mavericks has come to an end. The NBA star left the team today, ending a short and unsuccessful tenure in Big D.

According to ESPN, an agreement reached Sunday allows the two sides to part company immediately, without the Mavericks having to officially release Odom.

The unusual move means the struggling 13-year veteran is now off the Dallas roster for the remainder of the season, but rights are retained by the Mavericks.

The Mavericks and I have mutually agreed that it's in the best interest of both parties for me to step away from the team," Odom said in a statement to ESPN.

Lamar Odom in Dallas

"I'm sorry that things didn't work out better for both of us, but I wish the Mavs' organization, my teammates and Dallas fans nothing but continued success."

Sources said Odom's immediate departure allows the Mavs to list him as inactive, but not cut him, leaving open the possibility that they could still trade Odom.

Any team that has Odom on its roster as of June 29 must buy him out by that date for $2.4 million or pay the full $8.2 million Odom is set to earn in 2012-13.

The Mavs acquired the 13-year veteran before the season started in what looked like a steal of a deal with the L.A. Lakers. Wishful thinking, it turned out.

At the time of the trade, the Mavs were thought to have scored a huge coup - the reigning Sixth Man of the Year to help cushion the loss of Tyson Chandler.

That vision never materialized, though, as he struggled terribly. As we saw on last night's Khloe & Lamar, his head, heart and reality show were always in L.A.

Can You Install Your Own HVAC Unit?

Whether you?re replacing the old HVAC unit in your home or installing a heating and cooling system in a brand new home, you might be wondering if this is a job you can handle on your own. After all, why would you spend money hiring a Denver heating and air conditioning installation company if you don?t have to?

So, could you install your own HVAC unit?

Not to burst your bubble, but the answer is probably no.

Installing an HVAC unit is a complex job, and you have to realize that HVAC systems must meet certain building codes, requiring proper installation. Unless you?re a professional Denver heating and air conditioning contractor, you probably don?t know these codes and don?t know how to go about getting the necessary permits for the job.

But let?s say, for the sake of argument, that you do understand the codes and know how to get the permits.

Could you install your own HVAC unit then?

The answer is still probably no. Why? There are a lot of costs that go into the job. Installation takes a lot of time, and requires a lot of equipment. Furthermore, you have to buy the HVAC unit yourself. Contractors often have contracts with HVAC manufacturers, giving them the ability to purchase units at a discounted price so they can pass the savings on to you. You can?t get those low prices on your own.

Then, you have to consider the complexity of the job. You have to install ductwork and your HVAC unit, and if you don?t do it properly, your home won?t heat and cool properly. Furthermore, installation mistakes will cost you money by leading to higher energy bills, repairs, and a shortened lifetime for your HVAC system.

The bottom line is that this project is likely too technical for you to handle on your own.

That?s why you should consider hiring a Denver heating and air conditioning installer.

When looking for a contractor or company to install your HVAC system, start your search by asking friends and family for referrals. There?s a pretty good chance that someone you know has hired an HVAC contractor. But remember, just because someone gives you a referral doesn?t mean you should automatically hire that contractor. You still need to research your options and make sure the contractor is the right one for the job.

You can also use the internet to find Denver heating and air conditioning companies. Just do a search on Google, and spend time reading up on the local service providers. Make sure you check around online for customer reviews before you move forward with hiring any company. You want to verify that the company has a good local reputation.

Finally, you should get estimates from trusted contractors so you can find the best deal. Most companies will gladly provide you with a written estimate for installing your HVAC unit, making it easy for you to find the best deal.

Installing an HVAC unit is a technical job, but when you hire a professional, the whole thing will go quickly and smoothly.

?A good cup of Creole Coffee!? Is there anything in the whole range of food substances to be compared with it? And is there any city in the world where coffee is so delightfully concocted as in New Orleans??
-The Picayune?s Creole Cook Book (1901)

One of my first experiences in visiting New Orleans over 15 years ago was sampling caf??au lait and beignets at Caf?? du Monde. Like most tourists, I was not expecting to be covered in powdered sugar to the extent that occurred (the warning about not wearing black clothing when stopping here cannot be stated enough!), but it was well worth it. Another surprise was the then-unfamiliar, but strangely pleasant, chicory taste of the coffee, which was quite the jolt to this Yankee?s taste buds. For many, the coffee found in the Crescent City is an acquired taste, as attested to by numerous online coffee bloggers who insist it is not easy to find a good cup of coffee in New Orleans. Over the years, I expanded my NOLA coffee experience to include notable establishments such as CC?s, PJ?s, Mojo, Rue de la Course, Z?otz, Kahve, Fair Grinds, La Boulangerie, Magazine Perks, Royal Blend, Bayou Coffee House, Still Perkin?, Neutral Ground, the Bean Gallery, the Orange Couch, and others.

Since the Southern Food and Beverage Museum has debuted ?The Story of Coffee??exhibit and New Orleans remains the top coffee port in the United States, it seems appropriate for me to discuss this globally popular drink from a nutritional perspective.

Coffee has been a documented part of the human experience from as early as the 10th century. Historically and culturally, coffee is regarded as one of the world?s most potent elixirs, and recent research has supported claims for its health-enhancing properties. The taste of coffee is influenced by the type of bean (usually Arabica or Robusta) or blend, roast (medium, dark, and extra dark), region of origin, and brewing method, as well as any accompanying sweeteners, flavorings, and dairy products added to your cup. Cream and sugar will add flavor, along with fat and calories.

The distinctive taste I detected with my first cup of caf? au lait was due to chicory, a wild and edible plant which is beneficial to cholesterol and glucose levels, liver health, digestion, immune system functioning, and some intestinal diseases. Chicory root?s high levels of vitamin C and inulin (a type of fiber) are linked to lowered risk of colon cancer and increased absorption of calcium and magnesium (to maintain strong bones and teeth). This plant is a good source of the vitamins A, B complex, C, E, and K, as well as the minerals calcium, potassium, phosphorus, copper, zinc, and magnesium.

Get Mugged: Coffee in moderation is good for you

Existing controversies about coffee and health usually revolve around caffeine intake. There are health benefits in low to moderate caffeine use, including mood elevation, boosted energy levels, and increased mental focus. Risks with excessive caffeine use (more than four to seven cups per day) include increased anxiety, interference with sleep, irritability, restlessness, and potential habit-formation in certain individuals. Many of us who enjoy our daily java fix are all too familiar with the crushing headache experienced from withdrawal.

A six ounce serving of black coffee contains 100 mg of caffeine, which is enough of the stimulant to produce pleasant effects on mood and focus. Moderation is important, as those jittery feelings and anxiety are likely to develop in most individuals at the 200 to 400 mg level. This is easy to achieve when one considers that a grande size at Starbucks is 16 ounces, and a medium coffee from Dunkin? Donuts is 14 ounces. In addition to the caffeine factor, coffee consumption has been associated with heartburn, mild elevation of cholesterol, and increased risk of heart disease in susceptible people, though this seems to be affected by individual metabolism and genetic predisposition. You can still enjoy your java if you have any of these health issues. Portion sizes, timing, and frequency are key areas for modification. For example, individuals with heartburn should be able to consume up to 4 ounces of coffee in the morning with few negative consequences. However, drinking coffee later in the day or evening can increase the likelihood for heartburn symptoms.

Overall, the benefits of coffee seem to outweigh the risks, for most individuals. Coffee is rich in the antioxidants chlorogenic acid and trigonelline, which help to regulate glucose levels and insulin sensitivity. Research has suggested that moderate consumption of coffee may positively impact the regulation of type 2 diabetes and have beneficial effects on conditions involving inflammation. Studies have also indicated that coffee consumption in moderation may contribute to the prevention of several diseases, including colorectal cancer, Parkinson?s disease, type 2 diabetes, liver cancer, and reduced risk of alcoholic liver cirrhosis. The role of coffee consumption in psychological functioning, mental stress, weight regulation (due to appetite suppression and influence on metabolism), and sex hormone modulation are areas presently under investigation.

Numerous recipes include coffee (often with chicory) as a principal ingredient. A somewhat-challenging recipe for Creole Opera Cake made by Chef Carlos Guia at Commander?s Palace may be found here.

Recommendations from this Registered Dietitian (RD):

It is possible to make healthy choices at any coffee shop when you understand your options. Knowing that plain black coffee typically has only 4 calories per 6-ounce serving is helpful, but is that really why most of us journey to coffee shops? My 16-ounce mocha latte says no! However, it is possible to enjoy the more ?interesting? beverages in a more healthful fashion. Some tips:

1. Lose the cream. This is a tough one for many of us. Frankly, I would be a hypocrite if I said I didn?t use cream in my coffee. I firmly believe that moderation is the key to making healthier food choices, and I would not advise any client I?m counseling to abstain entirely from a food they adore if doing so will result in craving and over-indulging elsewhere. Yes, cream is high in calories and fat: 2 tablespoons of Half & Half (one serving) contains 2 grams of saturated fat (the ?bad? kind) and 40 calories. Keep in mind that a 2-tablespoon serving of cream is multiplied several times over in your cup from most coffee establishments. Using skim milk instead of cream can save up to 150 calories and 15 grams of fat. Let?s not forget whipped cream, which tops off many coffee shop creations, and can add 100 calories and over 10 grams of fat to your beverage. But as long as it doesn?t become a habit, indulging in the occasional ?with whip? is okay with this RD.

2.? Watch those portion sizes when monitoring nutrient and caffeine intake. While a traditional serving size of black coffee varies between six to eight ounces, most of us are easily downing twice that in a single medium or grande size beverage from popular coffeehouse chains.

3.? When I visited Caf??du Monde for the first time, like countless others, my caf??au lait was partnered with its extremely appealing and diet-challenging accomplice: the beignet. Beignets are usually served in sets of three, so splitting a serving with a friend will allow you to enjoy the taste and experience, while cutting back on some unneeded calories and fat.

4.? It doesn?t apply to caf??au lait and some of the traditional Southern coffee concoctions, but more recent caffeine suppliers offer substantial menu options involving flavored syrups. What?s the damage? One pump of syrup can add 20 calories and 5 grams of sugar to that latte. Though not all establishments can accommodate such a request, it is worth it to ask for sugar-free syrup options, or to minimize your intake with one pump of the regular stuff.

5.? If you desire more sweetness from your coffee kick, consider sugar substitutes (such as Splenda/sucralose) or natural alternative sweeteners (such as Truvia/stevia) to minimize calories and lessen risk of dental caries. Avoid sweeteners with aspartame, which has been associated with unpleasant neurological and psychiatric side effects.

So by all means, enjoy that caf??au lait from Caf??du Monde or get your java fix from any of the other wonderful coffee shops around New Orleans. Give chicory coffee a try if you haven?t had the experience. Just benefit from my past mistakes if you partner your brew with beignets: wear white.

Breast Cancer Survival Rate Linked to Veggie Consumption

Breast Cancer and Alcohol Consumption Risk

Probably the first bit of health advice we as humans ever get is the eternally present ?eat your vegetables!?, and it seems that for breast cancer sufferers, the basic knowledge could improve their chances of beating the illness.

Data suggesting as much came out of a study in China, and involved the consumption of cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, kale, cauliflower and broccoli. Although not yet published in a peer-reviewed journal, the research was presented at?the American Association for Cancer Research?s annual meeting yesterday.

broccoli breast cancer

The study of veggie consumption and breast cancer survival rates encompassed nearly 5,000 breast cancer survivors in China who had been diagnosed between 2002 and 2006. The women in the study ranged in diagnosis from Stage 1 to Stage 4, and higher amounts of cruciferous vegetables in the diets of the women studied was ultimately tied to better outcomes overall.

cruciferous vegetables

Sarah Nechuta was a researcher on the new study (cruciferous vegetables have been linked to better breast cancer outcomes in the past) and she explains that while researchers controlled for lifestyle and demographic factors, the impact of cruciferous vegetables in the diet seemed to track:

?Cruciferous vegetables, such as cauliflower, cabbage, bok choy, turnips and broccoli, contain high amounts of glucosinolates, which are hydrolyzed to bioactive compounds including isothiocyanates (ITCs) and indoles??These bioactive compounds have many anti-cancer properties that may influence cancer development, progression and survival.?

Oregon State University nutrition professor Emily Ho explains:

?An association has also been established with [cruciferous vegetables and] colon cancer and prostate cancer? There is pretty strong evidence from studies that compounds found in cruciferous vegetables may have cancer-fighting properties.?

In the study, women in the group who consumed the most cruciferous vegetables reduced overall as well as breast cancer-specific mortality by 62%, and slashed risk of recurrence by 35%.
