Urban baby blog: My family is sick with the flu and I'm losing my mind

When it comes to health, I?ve always been pretty lucky. Flu season always passed over my apartment. Friends, family, and neighbors would get sick year after year and I would be fine. I never got flu shots either. The first and last time I got the flu was when I was seven. Aside from the occasional common cold, and that one time I got food poisoning, I never got really sick ever again.

Then I had a kid.

It?s a vicious cycle. Adi gets sick from somebody at the playground. Then Adi gets me sick. Then Adi gets my mother sick. My mother gets my father sick. I get Mike sick. Mike gets Adi sick again. Adi gets me sick again, and I can?t call my mother for backup because she?s already sick. I?m stuck inside all day now, so Adi and I trade worse and worse mutations of the same disease back and forth for a couple of weeks. When it all passes, Adi gets sick from someone at library story time.

Flu season lasts for months around here.

I?ll never be healthy (or leave my apartment) again.

Let?s say your child is sick. Really sick. Not hospital level sick, but vomiting and sneezing everywhere, and terribly grumpy sick. Three phone calls an hour to the pediatrician sick.

How do you entertain? her? How do you entertain yourself? How many Disney movies can you watch in a row before your IQ starts to drop? How many Blue?s Clues do you have to solve before you start feeling good about yourself again?

I can solve Blue?s Clues after the first clue now. I found three plot holes in Yo Gabba Gabba. I?m turning into one of those mindless TV 24/7 addicts everyone talks about. All TV and no work makes Rachel an insane stay-at-home-mom stereotype.

I can?t go outside. I can?t even watch the news. Adi has total control over media consumption. If I even think about watching something without bright colors and alphabet songs Adi starts screaming.

If Chris Matthews could incorporate puppets and some current events based alphabet songs into his show I would be eternally grateful. A is for Abortion rights. B is for Barack Obama. C is for Chuck Hagel. D is for Debt Ceiling! It?ll be great.

And then there?s the medication.

Adi hates taking medication. She hits. She scratches. She?ll force me to force her mouth open. It doesn?t matter what the medication tastes like. It could taste like bubblegum, or rainbows, or cupcakes sprinkled with the ground up bones of unicorns. She won?t take it. I swear she throws it up on purpose. Since it?s so important for her to take medication now, I have to make sure it stays inside her. So what does that mean?

It means medicated suppositories.

I literally had to shove medication up her a**. As you can imagine, I was dreading it. How the hell am I going to explain to a medication averse toddler that I have to stick a vegetable glycerine bullet up her butt? Someone told me to just do it, and not tell her. That didn?t seem right to me. If somebody was about t shove something up me, I?d want a heads up.

So, when it came time for a diaper change, I told Adi that after I was done wiping her, I would be putting a suppository up her butt. She just nodded. I figured she didn?t understand. I braced myself for a kick in the throat and stuck it in.

Adi didn?t resist. After everything was?in there, she got up and ran to play with her toys.

They should make suppository versions of everything.

I found myself standing there offering prayers of thanks to the merciful G-d who saw it fit to make my child okay with suppositories. It?s the little things.

And then I read the part of the New York Times that nobody threw up on.

If you have flu symptoms stay away from moms. Please. Wash your hands every time you see a sink, coat yourself in hand sanitizer, spray that disinfecting stuff on everything you touch and cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. Until we have a cure for the flu, just stay home. If you?re a pediatrician please consider having wi-fi in your waiting room.

Also, if we had paid sick leave in my city, I probably wouldn?t get sick so often. Just throwing that out there.

World Sports Watch: Man Utd & City put pretenders in place; Euro round-up

Dominant United and City beat pretend pretenders

Reuters / Phuket Gazette

PHUKET: Premier League leaders Manchester United and second-placed champions Manchester City put former English heavyweights Liverpool and Arsenal firmly in their place yesterday with United's Robin van Persie again on song.

United sealed a needlessly nervy 2-1 home win over eighth-placed Liverpool to maintain their seven-point lead after Van Persie with a goal and Patrice Evra with two assists put rival Luis Suarez in the shade.

In contrast, the game in London was never in doubt with City winning 2-0 for their first league win at Arsenal in 38 years.

City were given a helping hand by the 9th-minute dismissal of Arsenal's Laurent Koscielny for wrestling Edin Dzeko to the ground before both James Milner and Dzeko netted before the break.

Liverpool have had to watch with horror over the last two decades as big rivals United undisputedly crowned themselves kings of the English game, trampling over the Anfield side's legacy after they had shone the brightest in the 1970s and 80s.

The first half at Old Trafford, which followed United's 2-1 win at Liverpool in September, suggested talk of the balance of power should be replaced by whisperings of the huge gulf in class such was the ineptitude of Brendan Rodgers' side.

Dutchman Van Persie, English football's in-form striker along with Liverpool's Suarez, grabbed a 19th minute opener when he swept in Evra's cross in inimitable style.

"Robin van Persie is different class. He produces moments in the game others can't do and we are glad he is on our side," man of the match Danny Welbeck told Sky.

"We had our game plan and it worked really well in the first half. They came into it more in the second half but we got the three points and showed our character."

Forward Welbeck, preferred to the in-form Javier Hernandez in the absence of the injured Wayne Rooney, justified his start with some good play although he should have done better twice in the first half when almost clean through.

Van Persie, who now has 17 goals as the league top scorer, had another chance just before the break as United overran their toothless north west neighbours but he oddly chose a cheeky flick which Martin Skrtel cleared just before the line.

Forgettable performance
Uruguay's Suarez, with 15 league goals this term, was often jeered by the home crowd in a forgettable performance where nothing went right but he took the sting out of any more vocal taunts by shaking Evra's hand before kick off.

Suarez failed to do so last season at Old Trafford after serving an eight-game ban for racially abusing the Frenchman.

The arrival of the lively Daniel Sturridge at halftime for his Premier League debut after joining from Chelsea and the fact they somehow went into the break just 1-0 down boosted Liverpool's confidence in the second half.

It was soon dampened when Van Persie's free kick was headed goalwards by Evra, prolific for a left back with four goals this term, and the ball deflected off team mate Vidic before bulging the net. No Liverpool players appealed for offside but replays showed the Serbian was just ahead of their back line.

Liverpool's defence and especially Johnson had been found wanting for the goal but Sturridge dug them half out of a hole when he struck after 57 minutes when Gerrard's piledriver could only be palmed into his path by goalkeeper David De Gea.

England's Sturridge then missed three decent chances as United boss Alex Ferguson fretted in the dugout and visiting Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho, scouting United ahead of their Champions League clash, raised an eyebrow beneath the hood he used to shield himself from the cold and the cameras.

As it was, United closed out the win without further alarm.

City were hardly ever in danger at sixth-placed Arsenal and despite the angry response from the famously placid home fans, referee Mike Dean had little choice but to dismiss defender Koscielny for the offending bear hug and award a penalty.

Dzeko's spot kick hit keeper Wojciech Szczesny, rebounded off the post and ran along the line into the Pole's grateful arms.

Arsenal fans, held up coming into the ground because of a suspect package, could have been forgiven for thinking it might be their day after all but it soon turned into another painful game for a team who have not won a trophy since 2005.

City have usurped Arsenal as continual title challengers and their class against 10 men soon told when Milner rifled in a smart effort in the 21st minute after a good Carlos Tevez pass following a quick free kick.

Arsenal supporters also outraged by the free kick award sang "1-0 to the referee" but that was disingenuous given the foothold of Roberto Mancini's side and it was soon 2-0.

England midfielder Milner whipped in a cross and though the keeper stopped Tevez's close range effort, Dzeko could not miss.

Arsene Wenger's team barely threatened with the inconsistent Theo Walcott isolated up front and proving again that he is not the finished article by blasting one good chance woefully wide.

City's Vincent Kompany was harshly sent off for a robust challenge with 15 minutes to go but the second half was largely a non-event in the cold, somewhere Liverpool and Arsenal could be for quite some time given United and City's dominance.

European round-up
Another goal from the prolific Lionel Messi helped Barcelona to a 3-1 victory over Malaga in La Liga as the leaders ended the first half of the season with a record points haul.

Juventus's lead in Serie A was cut once again after they were held 1-1 at Parma.

Spain
Unbeaten leaders Barcelona ended the first half of the season with a record 55 of a possible 57 points when Messi scored one goal and had a hand in two more in a 3-1 win at Malaga on Sunday.

An 18th victory in 19 games for Tito Vilanova's side restored their 11-point lead over second-placed Atletico Madrid, who earlier secured a 10th win in 10 home matches this term with a 2-0 success against Real Zaragoza.

Barca's win also extended their advantage over arch rivals Real Madrid to 18 points after the stuttering champions, mired in third, were held to a 0-0 draw at bottom side Osasuna on Saturday.

Messi's goal was the World Player of the Year's 28th in the league this season and the ninth straight game he has scored, a personal best and one short of the La Liga record last achieved in the 1996-97 season by former Barca striker Ronaldo.

England
Chelsea are third after a 4-0 triumph at Stoke City's usual fortress after two Jon Walters own goals while fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur drew 0-0 at former boss Harry Redknapp's bottom side Queens Park Rangers.

Italy
Juventus, eight points clear at the top of Serie A before Christmas, had their lead cut to three by Lazio after they were held 1-1 at Parma.

Andrea Pirlo gave put Juventus ahead early in the second half with a free kick which was deflected in by Jonathan Biabiany but Nicola Sansone kept Parma's unbeaten home record intact with a 77th minute equaliser.

Lazio took advantage of the result by beating Atlanta 2-0 with a controversial second-half goal from Sergio Floccari, who appeared to control the ball with his hand, and an own goal by Davide Brivio.

Napoli stayed two points behind Lazio in third with a 3-0 win over Palermo while Cagliari's 2-1 win at home to Genoa lifted them out of the relegation zone.

France
Olympique Lyon reclaimed the Ligue 1 top spot with a 2-1 win at struggling Troyes thanks to centre back Samuel Umtiti's first league goal.

Lyon are on 41 points from 20 games, two ahead of Paris St Germain who could only manage a 0-0 home draw against lowly Ajaccio after Thiago Motta was sent off on the stroke of half time.

Olympique Marseille are third on 38 after their four-game winning run in all competitions ended with a 3-1 defeat at 17th-placed Sochaux.

Girondins Bordeaux moved up to fourth with a 2-0 win at Stade Rennes, who fell to sixth. Both clubs are on 32 points, along with Nice who were inspired by striker Dario Cvitanich's brace in their 5-0 home hammering of Valenciennes.

Portugal
Benfica and Porto scored twice each in a goal-filled opening 20 minutes of a match that ended 2-2 at the Luz stadium to keep the Portuguese Premier League title chase wide open.

The Lisbon club lead the table with 36 points from 14 matches, three ahead of Porto who have a game in hand.

Third-placed Braga missed the opportunity to close in on the pace-setters, losing 3-2 at Nacional, and are 10 points behind Benfica.

Twitter UK subsidiary TweetDeck faces closure if it fails to file financial accounts (again)

TweetDeck Ltd., the Twitter-owned company behind the immensely popular social media dashboard app with the same name, risks closure in the United Kingdom after repeatedly failing to file financial accounts with the business regulator, reports Sky News.

In the UK, all registered limited companies, including subsidiary, small and inactive firms, must file annual financial statements with Companies House in addition to annual company returns, which are all public records.

The returns are used as a basis for tax filings with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), a non-ministerial department of the UK Government responsible for the collection of taxes.

According to the Sky News report, TweetDeck has been very sloppy. It has already missed two deadlines, in September and December 2012, and a Companies House spokesperson tells the news service that the company now has only 99 days left to file up-to-date financial accounts.

If it misses the third deadline, the Twitter UK subsidiary may be removed from the register and face dissolution.

It?s important to note, however, that there is no suggestion that Twitter or TweetDeck have dodged any tax liability.

As Sky News points out, TweetDeck has already been automatically fined ?375 (roughly $600) twice for missing the previous deadlines, and may receive a fine totalling ?1,500 if it fails to file financial accounts ?shortly?.

In that case, TweetDeck may also become subject to debt recovery procedures and legal action.

We?ve reached out to parent company Twitter and will update if and when we hear back.

Update: Twitter declined to comment.

It?s odd that Twitter didn?t take care of things after receiving the first penalty in September 2012, but my educated guess is that the Sky News report will garner enough attention to push it into action-taking mode.

Twitter?s official UK subsidiary (which exists alongside TweetDeck) has also been fined in the past for failing to report financial accounts to the UK business regulator, but has since sorted this.

Just last week, public records showed that Twitter UK posted profits of a mere ?16,500 (approximately $26.600).

New camera samples of Sony Xperia Z appears

Sony_Xperia_Z_Sample_Image (6)

Sony?s Xperia Z is the Japanese company?s flagship smartphone of the year 2013. Being a flagship device, it obviously comes with top notch specs. Sony takes imaging seriously, and when it comes to cameras on their smartphones, they get really serious.

Sony has a brand of camera sensors called Exmor ? ?Exmor is the name of a technology Sony implemented on some of their CMOS image sensors. It performs on-chip analogue/digital signal conversion and two-step noise reduction in parallel on each column of the CMOS sensor.? The company puts Exmor sensors even on its mid range device, so it?s obvious that the flagship Xperia Z will also get the same treatment. In order to stand out of the crowd of super spec?d Android smartphones, Sony has given the flagship smartphone a 13 megapixel auto-focus camera that feature 1080p video recording and an Exmor RS sensor. The current standard for high end smartphone is 8 megapixel camera, so Sony?s offering definitely stands out of the crop by flexing their muscles in the imaging department. Even the Lumia 920, which supposedly clicks the best pictures in the segment, comes with an 8 megapixel camera.

It should be noted that megapixels just tells half of the story, similar to what clock speed explains us while buying a computer or smartphone. It is a well-known fact that the GHz rating tells us little about final performance of the processor. Same is the case with number of megapixel and the level of details captured ultimately depends on quality and size of the sensor, and that is why smartphones aren?t able to click great photographs when compared to a DSLR or a point-and-shoot camera for that matter. The device was present at CES 2013 and there were few camera output samples on the internet, but that was a pre-production model and the final product may most probably click even better pictures. Anyways, now we have some outdoor photographs that were taken using a Xperia Z smartphone armed with 13 MP Exmor RS camera sensor.

Sony_Xperia_Z_Sample_Image (11)

I have attached few pictures over here, but if you are interested to see more, you can follow the link in source. About the image, as you can see, the set is staged outdoors, and the weather is not exactly cloudy. The phone did get good amount of help from sunshine to illuminate the scene most of the time. More challenging dynamic range corners were met with a bit of overexposure, but most of the phones do that, so not a deal breaker. The shots were clicked either in normal, 13 MP mode, or the Superior Auto, 12 MP one, using a pre-production model, which means that the software is yet to be finalized and the products which will finally ship may even click better images.

We have some unofficial pricing figures for the Xperia Z, and the bad news is that it is not going to be cheap. Several European retailers are suggesting the price tag to be north of $800. The device will be most probably offered on contract, which should be relatively cheaper. What do you think?

Ex-Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, convicted of killings, will be retried

From Amir Ahmed, CNN

updated 1:14 PM EST, Sun January 13, 2013

Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was jailed for life following his conviction in June 2012.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • NEW: Adviser to current president said they're looking forward to second trial
  • Hosni Mubarak was found guilty last June of killing protesters
  • Former president to remain in custody, lawyer says
  • The court also accepted appeals by Mubarak's co-defendants

(CNN) -- Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who is serving a life sentence for his role in the killings of peaceful protesters during the revolution that eventually deposed him, will get a new trial.

Mubarak and his former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly had appealed their life sentences. A judge agreed, the state-run al-Ahram newspaper reported Sunday.

Mubarak's lawyer said Mubarak will remain in jail as he awaits his next court date, which will likely be in April.

The judge also said that others facing charges should also be retried, including six interior ministry deputies, the state-run MENA news agency said.

Essam El-Erian, a senior adviser to Egyptian President Mohamed Morsy, said that they looked forward to a second trial, the Freedom and Justice Party stated on its website.

"God willed the retrial would take place under Morsy's rule, with new evidence and new defendants," El-Erian said.

Mubarak. who ruled Egypt for 30 years, was found guilty last June of ordering the killing of protesters and was immediately transferred to Tora prison in southern Cairo to serve his life sentence.

The 84-year-old has suffered a range of physical problems since he was driven from office in February 2011, following weeks of protests by Egyptians demanding more freedom and reforms.

He attended his trial later that year on a gurney.

Last month, Mubarak was transferred to a military hospital after suffering a head injury and a bruised chest when he slipped in a prison hospital bathroom, Egyptian state-run media reported.

Journalist Sarah Sirgany contributed to this report.
