UNIT I Place, Goals and Objectives of Biology

Biology in the school curriculum ? its claims for inclusion ? Interdisciplinary approaches in the school curriculum ? Various branches related to Life Science.

Goals and objectives of teaching Biology with reference to Bloom?s taxonomy- Cognitive, Affective and Psychomotor Domains. Aims of teaching Biology at different levels ? Primary, Secondary and Higher Secondary.

Biology in the school curriculum

??????????? Biology is a natural science concerned with the study of life and living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, distribution, and taxonomy. Biology is a vast subject containing many subdivisions, topics, and disciplines. Among the most important topics are five unifying principles that can be said to be the fundamental axioms of modern biology:

  1. Cells are the basic unit of life
  2. New species and inherited traits are the product of evolution
  3. Genes are the basic unit of heredity
  4. An organism regulates its internal environment to maintain a stable and constant condition
  5. Living organisms consume and transform energy.
??????????? Sub disciplines of biology are recognized on the basis of the scale at which organisms are studied and the methods used to study them: biochemistry examines the rudimentary chemistry of life; molecular biology studies the complex interactions of systems of biological molecules; cellular biology examines the basic building block of all life, the cell; physiology examines the physical and chemical functions of the tissues, organs, and organ systems of an organism; and ecology examines how various organisms interact and associate with their environment.

What is science?

??????????? The word "science" probably brings to mind many different pictures: a fat textbook, white lab coats and microscopes, an astronomer peering through a telescope, a naturalist in the rainforest, Einstein's equations scribbled on a chalkboard, the launch of the space shuttle, bubbling beakers ?. All of those images reflect some aspect of science, but none of them provides a full picture because science has so many facets:

  • Science is both a body of knowledge and a process. In school, science may sometimes seem like a collection of isolated and static facts listed in a textbook, but that's only a small part of the story. Just as importantly, science is also a process of discovery that allows us to link isolated facts into coherent and comprehensive understandings of the natural world.
  • Science is exciting. Science is a way of discovering what's in the universe and how those things work today, how they worked in the past, and how they are likely to work in the future. Scientists are motivated by the thrill of seeing or figuring out something that no one has before.
  • Science is useful. The knowledge generated by science is powerful and reliable. It can be used to develop new technologies, treat diseases, and deal with many other sorts of problems.
  • Science is ongoing. Science is continually refining and expanding our knowledge of the universe, and as it does, it leads to new questions for future investigation. Science will never be "finished."
  • Science is a global human endeavor. People all over the world participate in the process of science. And you can too!

Science is complex and multi-faceted, but the most important characteristics of science are straightforward:

  • Science focuses exclusively on the natural world, and does not deal with supernatural explanations.
  • Science is a way of learning about what is in the natural world, how the natural world works, and how the natural world got to be the way it is. It is not simply a collection of facts; rather it is a path to understanding.
  • Scientists work in many different ways, but all science relies on testing ideas by figuring out what expectations are generated by an idea and making observations to find out whether those expectations hold true.
  • Accepted scientific ideas are reliable because they have been subjected to rigorous testing, but as new evidence is acquired and new perspectives emerge these ideas can be revised.
  • Science is a community endeavor. It relies on a system of checks and balances, which helps ensure that science moves in the direction of greater accuracy and understanding. This system is facilitated by diversity within the scientific community, which offers a broad range of perspectives on scientific ideas.

??????????? Too many, science may seem like an arcane, ivory-towered institution ? but that impression is based on a misunderstanding of science. In fact:

  • Science affects your life everyday in all sorts of different ways.
  • Science can be fun and is accessible to everyone.
  • You can apply an understanding of how science works to your everyday life.
  • Anyone can become a scientist ? of the amateur or professional variety.

Academic Press Dictionary of Science & Technology

?????????? Science is an intellectual activity carried on by humans that is designed to discover information about the natural world in which humans live and to discover the ways in which this information can be organized into meaningful patterns. A primary aim of science is to collect facts (data). An ultimate purpose of science is to discern the order that exists between and amongst the various facts.

??????????? Science involves more than the gaining of knowledge. It is the systematic and organized inquiry into the natural world and its phenomena. Science is about gaining a deeper and often useful understanding of the world.

The Nature of Normal Science

?

?????????? Normal science is the practice of gaining knowledge by using some paradigm. It therefore has a perspective, common rules, facts, and problems. Its task is to solidify, reify, and articulate the paradigm; quantify its predictions, extend it to new areas, and to develop the technology needed. It rejects the approbations of the lay. It does not attempt to answer all problems. It uses facts considered revealing to solve problems considered acute by the paradigm. It is to articulate accepted phenomena. Problems must be challenging but not hopeless. Frequently the paradigm and its rules are tacit, they cannot be articulated. The adequacy of a paradigm is judged by peers not lay.

??????????? Normal science is the finding of previously unpredicted phenomena and showing how that phenomenon is explainable with the existing paradigm. Finding unexplainable phenomena is not science; anyone can be capable of not explaining something. Brain damage helps enormously. Normal science does not produce new phenomena; it articulates those that the paradigm supplies. Extending the paradigm (showing how the paradigm explains previously unexplainable events) is mopping up and is where most scientists spend their lives.

??????????? A paradigm gains status because it handles problems that practitioners feel are important - not because it handles all problems.

??????????? 1. Empirical work to articulate paradigm or theory. Determinants of physical constants / quantitative laws / determination of way to apply paradigm to new situation.

??????????? 2. Facts without intrinsic interest which can be compared to predictions from the paradigm.

??????????? 3. Class of facts that the paradigm has shown to be revealing of nature. To desert the paradigm is to cease practicing the science it defines. The task is to explain current problems with rules such that the majority of past findings are consistent, somewhat like a judge trying to be consistent with precedent, or trying to minimize sum of squared differences when determining a regression line.

Fact

? ???????? ?1. ?Something that actually exists; reality; truth: Your fears have no basis in fact.

??????????? ?2. Something known to exist or to have happened: Space travel is now a fact.

3. A truth known by actual experience or observation; something known to be true: ???Scientists gather facts about plant growth.

4. Something said to be true or supposed to have happened: The facts given by the witness are highly questionable.

5. Law often, facts an actual or alleged event or circumstance, as distinguished from its legal effect or consequence. Compare question of fact, question of law.

There are four types of fact. The first type of fact cannot be proved by the experiments as we wish. We have to see this fact when it happens. The second type of fact can be seen and shown at any time. The third type of fact is the generalization i.e. one fact is associating with another fact. The fourth type is a theory but it is treated as fact because of the evidences to prove the theory.

BIOLOGY AS A SCIENCE

??????????? When we say science we know pretty well that includes not only physics and chemistry but also Biology. We can give three reasons to prove that Biology is also a science. They are:

1.????? Biology possesses the characters of other branches of science like practical, experiments, data and utility for the life. We know that all the three branches of science possess all these qualities. Biology also gives the same benefits to the society as the other branches.

2.????? Biology gives a complete and notable knowledge like other branches of science. We know that physics deals with instruments and equipments, chemistry deals with chemical substances and their combinations and biology deals with living organisms. So it gives a complete notable knowledge about living organisms.

3.????? Biology gives extra training in the scientific method. We know that scientific method is a method followed by scientists to develop science. While physics and chemistry gives training to the pupil in this method, Biology is expected to give extra training in this method. This is because it deals with living organisms and they have to face complex problems in their life. The pupils are expected to adopt the scientific method in order to find how the living organisms overcome the complex problems. So they get extra training in the scientific method by studying Biology. Because of these three reasons Biology is considered as science along with other branches of science. ?

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF TEACHING BIOLOGY WITH REFERENCE TO BLOOM?S TAXONOMY

Benjamin Bloom's Taxonomy of Learning Domains - Cognitive, Affective, Psychomotor Domains - design and evaluation toolkit for training and learning

??????????? Bloom's Taxonomy, (in full: 'Bloom's Taxonomy of Learning Domains', or strictly speaking: Bloom's 'Taxonomy Of Educational Objectives') was initially (the first part) published in 1956 under the leadership of American academic and educational expert Dr Benjamin S Bloom. 'Bloom's Taxonomy' was originally created in and for an academic context, (the development commencing in 1948), when Benjamin Bloom chaired a committee of educational psychologists, based in American education, whose aim was to develop a system of categories of learning behaviour to assist in the design and assessment of educational learning. Bloom's Taxonomy has since been expanded over many years by Bloom and other contributors (notably Anderson and Krathwhol as recently as 2001, whose theories extend Bloom's work to far more complex levels than are explained here, and which are more relevant to the field of academic education than to corporate training and development).

??????????? Most corporate trainers and HR professionals, coaches and teachers, will benefit significantly by simply understanding the basics of Bloom's Taxonomy, as featured below. (If you want to know more, there is a vast amount of?related reading and references, listed at the end of this summary explanation.)

Bloom's Taxonomy was primarily created for academic education; however it is relevant to all types of learning.

??????????? Interestingly, at the outset, Bloom believed that education should focus on 'mastery' of subjects and the promotion of higher forms of thinking, rather than a utilitarian approach to simply transferring facts. Bloom demonstrated decades ago that most teaching tended to be focused on fact-transfer and information recall - the lowest level of training - rather than true meaningful personal development, and this remains a central challenge for educators and trainers in modern times. Much corporate training is also limited to non-participative, unfeeling knowledge-transfer, (all those stultifying boring PowerPoint presentations...), which is reason alone to consider the breadth and depth approach exemplified in Bloom's model.

You might find it helpful now to see the?Bloom Taxonomy overview. Did you realize there were all these potential dimensions to training and learning?

??????????? Benjamin S Bloom (1913-99) attained degrees at Pennsylvania State University in 1935. He joined the Department of Education at the University of Chicago in 1940 and attained a PhD in Education in 1942, during which time he specialized in examining. Here he met his mentor Ralph Tyler with whom he first began to develop his ideas for developing a system (or 'taxonomy') of specifications to enable educational training and learning objectives to be planned and measured properly - improving the effectiveness of developing 'mastery' instead of simply transferring facts for mindless recall. Bloom continued to develop the Learning Taxonomy model through the 1960's, and was appointed Charles H Swift Distinguished Service Professor at Chicago in 1970. He served as adviser on education to several overseas governments including of Israel and India.

??????????? Bloom's (and his colleagues') initial attention was focused on the?'Cognitive Domain', which was the first published part of Bloom's Taxonomy, featured in the publication: 'Taxonomy Of Educational Objectives: Handbook 1, The Cognitive Domain' (Bloom, Engelhart, Furst, Hill, Krathwohl, 1956).

??????????? The 'Taxonomy of Educational Objectives: Handbook II, The Affective Domain' (Bloom, Masia, Krathwohl) as the title implies, deals with the detail of the second domain, the?'Affective Domain', and was published in 1964.

??????????? Various people suggested detail for the third?'Psychomotor Domain', which explains why this domain detail varies in different representations of the complete Bloom Taxonomy. The three most popularly referenced versions of the Psychomotor Domain seem to be those of???? RH Dave?(1967/70),?EJ Simpson (1966/72), and?AJ Harrow?(1972).

??????????? As such 'Bloom's Taxonomy' describes the three-domain structure, within which the detail may vary, especially for the third domain.

??????????? Bloom's Taxonomy has therefore since 1956 provided a basis for ideas which have been used (and developed) around the world by academics, educators, teachers and trainers, for the preparation of learning evaluation materials, and also provided the platform for the complete 'Bloom's Taxonomy' (including the detail for the third 'Psychomotor Domain') as we see it today. Collectively these concepts which make up the whole Bloom Taxonomy continue to be useful and very relevant to the planning and design of: school, college and university education, adult and corporate training courses, teaching and lesson plans, and learning materials; they also serve as a template for the evaluation of: training, teaching, learning and development, within every aspect of education and industry.

Training or learning design and evaluation need not cover all aspects of the Taxonomy - just make sure there is coverage of the aspects that are appropriate.

??????????? As such, if in doubt about your training aims - check what's possible, and perhaps required, by referring to Bloom's Taxonomy.

Explanation of bloom's taxonomy

??????????? First, don't be put off by the language or the apparent complexity of Bloom's Taxonomy - at this basic level it's a relatively simple and logical model.

??????????? Taxonomy?means 'a set of classification principles', or 'structure', and?Domain?simply means 'category'. Bloom and his colleagues were academics, looking at learning as a behavioural science, and writing for other academics, which is why they never called it 'Bloom's Learning Structure', which would perhaps have made more sense to people in the business world. (Interestingly this example of the use of technical language provides a helpful lesson in learning itself, namely, if you want to get an idea across to people, you should try to use language that your audience will easily recognize and understand.)

??????????? Bloom's Taxonomy underpins the classical 'Knowledge, Attitude, Skills' structure of learning method and evaluation, and aside from the even simpler?Kirkpatrick learning evaluation model, Bloom's Taxonomy of Learning Domains remains the most widely used system of its kind in education particularly, and also industry and corporate training. It's easy to see why, because it is such a simple, clear and effective model, both for explanation and application of learning objectives, teaching and training methods, and measurement of learning outcomes.

??????????? Bloom's Taxonomy provides an excellent structure for planning, designing, assessing and evaluating training and learning effectiveness. The model also serves as a sort of?checklist, by which you can ensure that training is planned to deliver all the necessary development for students, trainees or learners, and a template by which you can assess the validity and coverage of any existing training, be it a course, a curriculum, or an entire training and development programme for a large organization.

??????????? It is fascinating that Bloom's Taxonomy model (1956/64) and?Kirkpatrick's learning evaluation model (1959) remain classical reference models and tools into the 21st century. This is because concepts such as Bloom's Taxonomy, Kirkpatrick's model,?Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs,?Mcgregor's XY Theory, The?SWOT analysis?model, and?Berne's Transactional Analysis theory, to name a few other examples, are timeless, and as such will always be relevant to the understanding and development of people and organizations. Bloom?s taxonomy definitions

??????????? Bloom's Taxonomy model is in three parts, or 'overlapping domains'. Again, Bloom used rather academic language, but the meanings are simple to understand:

  1. Cognitive domain?(intellectual capability, i.e.,?knowledge, or?'think')
  2. Affective domain?(feelings, emotions and behaviour, i.e.,?attitude, or?'feel')
  3. Psychomotor domain?(manual and physical skills, i.e.,?skills, or?'do')

??????????? This has given rise to the obvious short-hand variations on the theme which summaries the three domains; for example, Skills-Knowledge-Attitude, KAS, Do-Think-Feel, etc.

??????????? Various people have since built on Bloom's work, notably in the third domain, the 'psychomotor' or skills, which Bloom originally identified in a broad sense, but which he never fully detailed. This was apparently because Bloom and his colleagues felt that the academic environment held insufficient expertise to analyze and create a suitable reliable structure for the physical ability 'Psychomotor' domain. While this might seem strange, such caution is not uncommon among expert and highly specialized academics - they strive for accuracy as well as innovation. In Bloom's case it is as well that he left a few gaps for others to complete the detail; the model seems to have benefited from having several different contributors fill in the detail over the years, such as Anderson, Krathwhol, Masia, Simpson, Harrow and Dave (these last three having each developed versions of the third 'Psychomotor' domain).

??????????? In each of the three domains Bloom's Taxonomy is based on the premise that the categories are ordered in degree of difficulty.?An important premise of Bloom's Taxonomy is that each category (or 'level') must be mastered before progressing to the next. As such the categories within each domain are levels of learning development, and these levels increase in difficulty.

??????????? The simple matrix structure enables a checklist or template to be constructed for the design of learning programmes, training courses, lesson plans, etc. Effective learning - especially in organizations, where training is to be converted into organizational results - should arguably cover all the levels of each of the domains, where relevant to the situation and the learner.

??????????? The learner should benefit from development of knowledge and intellect (Cognitive Domain); attitude and beliefs (Affective Domain); and the ability to put physical and bodily skills into effect - to act (Psychomotor Domain).

??????????? Here's a really simple adapted 'at-a-glance' representation of Bloom's Taxonomy. The definitions are intended to be simple modern day language, to assist explanation and understanding. This simple overview can help you (and others) to understand and explain the taxonomy. Refer back to it when considering and getting to grips with the detailed structures - this overview helps to clarify and distinguish the levels.

??????????? For the more precise original Bloom Taxonomy terminology and definitions see the more detailed domain structures beneath this at-a-glance model. It's helpful at this point to consider also the ?conscious competence' learning stages model, which provides a useful perspective for all three domains, and the concept of developing competence by stages in sequence.

N.B. In the Cognitive Domain, levels 5 and 6, Synthesis and Evaluation, were subsequently inverted by Anderson and Krathwhol in 2001. Anderson and Krathwhol also developed a complex two-dimensional extension of the Bloom Taxonomy, which is not explained here. If you want to learn more about the bleeding edge of academic educational learning and evaluation there is a list of further references below. For most mortals in teaching and training what's on this page is probably enough to make a start, and a big difference.

??????????????? Note also that the Psychomotor Domain featured above is based on the domain detail established by RH Dave (who was a student of Bloom) in 1967 (conference paper) and 1970 (book). The Dave model is the simplest and generally easiest to apply in the corporate development environment. Alternative Psychomotor Domains structures have been suggested by others, notably?Harrow and Simpson's models detailed below. I urge you explore the?Simpson?and?Harrow?Psychomotor Domain alternatives - especially for the development of children and young people, and for developing skills in adults that take people out of their comfort zones. This is because the Simpson and Harrow models offer different emotional perspectives and advantages, which are useful for certain learning situations, and which do not appear so obviously in the structure of the Dave model.

??????????? Bloom's Taxonomy in more detailed structure follows, with more formal terminology and definitions. Refer back to the?Bloom Taxonomy overview?any time you need to refresh or clarify your perception of the model. It is normal to find that the extra detail can initially cloud the basic structure - which is actually quite simple - so it's helpful to keep the simple overview to hand.

?Bloom?s taxonomy learning domains - detailed structures

Bloom's Taxonomy 1956 Cognitive Domain is as follows. An adjusted model was produced by Anderson and Krathwhol in 2001 in which the levels five and six (synthesis and evaluation) were inverted (reference: Anderson & Krathwhol, A Taxonomy for Learning, Teaching, and Assessing: A Revision of Bloom's Taxonomy of Educational Objectives, 2001). This is why you will see different versions of this Cognitive Domain model. Debate continues as to the order of levels five and six, which is interesting given that Bloom's Taxonomy states that the levels must be mastered in order.

??????????? In my humble opinion it's possible to argue either case (Synthesis then Evaluation, or vice-versa) depending on the circumstances and the precise criteria stated or represented in the levels concerned, plus the extent of 'creative thinking' and 'strategic authority' attributed to or expected at the 'Synthesis' level. In short - pick the order which suits your situation.

??????????? Based on the 'Taxonomy Of Educational Objectives: Handbook 1, The Cognitive Domain' (Bloom, Engelhart, Furst, Hill, Krathwhol) 1956. This table is adapted and reproduced with permission from Allyn & Bacon, Boston USA, being the publishers and copyright owners of 'Taxonomy Of Educational Objectives' (Bloom et al 1956).

Note that levels 5 and 6, Synthesis and Evaluation, were subsequently inverted by Anderson and Krathwhol in 2001, on which point:

??????????? The question of the order of Synthesis and Evaluation is dependent upon the extent of strategic expectation and authority that is built into each, which depends on your situation. Hence it is possible to make a case for Bloom's original order shown above, or Anderson and Krathwhol version of 2001 (which simply inverts levels 5 and 6).

??????????? The above version is the original, and according to the examples and assumptions presented in the above matrix, is perfectly appropriate and logical. I also personally believe the above order to be appropriate for?corporate and industrial training and development?if?'Evaluation'?is taken to represent?executive or strategic assessment and decision-making, which is effectively at the pinnacle of the corporate intellect-set.

??????????? The inversion of Synthesis and Evaluation carries a risk unless it is properly qualified. This is because the highest skill level absolutely must involve?strategic evaluation; effective management - especially of large activities or organizations - relies on strategic evaluation. And clearly,?strategic evaluation is by implication included in the 'Evaluation' category.

??????????? I would also argue that in order to evaluate properly and strategically, we need first to have learned and experienced the execution of the strategies (ie, to have completed the synthesis step) that we intend to evaluate.

??????????? However, you should feel free to invert levels 5 and 6 if warranted by your own particular circumstances, particularly if your interpretation of 'Evaluation' is non-strategic, and not linked to decision-making. Changing the order of the levels is warranted if local circumstances alter the degree of difficulty. Remember, the taxonomy is based in the premise that the degree of difficulty increases through the levels - people need to learn to walk before they can run - it's that simple. So, if your situation causes 'Synthesis' to be more challenging than 'Evaluation', then change the order of the levels accordingly (i.e., invert 5 and 6 like Anderson and Krathwhol did), so that you train people in the correct order.

??????????? Bloom's Taxonomy second domain, the Affective Domain, was detailed by Bloom, Krathwhol and Masia in 1964 (Taxonomy of Educational Objectives: Volume II, The Affective Domain. Bloom, Krathwhol and Masia.) Bloom's theory advocates this structure and sequence for developing attitude - also now commonly expressed in the modern field of personal development as 'beliefs'. Again, as with the other domains, the Affective Domain detail provides a framework for teaching, training, assessing and evaluating the effectiveness of training and lesson design and delivery, and also the retention by and affect upon the learner or trainee.

Rock legends take to New York stage for storm Sandy victims

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones and Alicia Keys were among the musical stars headlining an all-star benefit concert for victims of Superstorm Sandy on Wednesday, in what producers promised was "the greatest line-up of legends ever assembled on a stage."

Organizers said the "12-12-12" concert at New York's Madison Square Garden was being distributed to nearly 2 billion people worldwide through television feeds, radio and online streaming.

"How do I begin again? My city's in ruins?" Springsteen sang. He was joined by fellow New Jersey native Jon Bon Jovi for "Born to Run," ushering in a night of musical duets.

Next up, Roger Waters performed alongside Eddie Vedder, and Paul McCartney was due to jam later in the evening with Dave Grohl.

"This has got to be the largest collection of old English musicians ever assembled in Madison Square Garden," Mick Jagger told the crowd. The Stones performed "You Got Me Rocking" and "Jumpin' Jack Flash."

To help with the fundraising, celebrities such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Kristen Stewart, Jake Gyllenhaal, Chelsea Clinton and Billy Crystal took part in a telethon during the concert, which was expected to last four to five hours.

Comedian Adam Sandler took the stage for a Sandy-themed spoof on Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," rhyming the title with "Sandy, Screw Ya!"

Backstage, actress Susan Sarandon recounted losing power in her New York home but said that was a small hardship compared with the real victims who lost their homes.

Steven Van Zandt, guitarist of the E Street Band, scolded "the oil companies" and "Wall Street guys" for not doing more to help.

"Even with the music business not what it used to be ... we are proud to be here," he said.

Before the concert, producer John Sykes said $32 million had already been raised from ticket sales and sponsorships. Organizers are hoping to raise tens of millions more.

It was being broadcast live on television, radio, movie theaters, on Facebook and iHeartRadio, and streamed on digital billboards in New York's Times Square, London and Paris.

EXPANDING FUNDRAISING'S REACH

More than 130 people were killed when Sandy pummeled the East Coast of the United States in October. Thousands more were left homeless as the storm tore through areas of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, causing billions of dollars in damage.

Throughout the show, celebrities shared memories of growing up in New York City or the Jersey Shore, and offered shout-outs to first responders.

"Watching my hometown get pummeled was devastating to watch," said actor-comedian Crystal, who grew up on Long Beach, Long Island. "It's a helpless feeling of what's in store for us maybe in the future."

Sykes was also involved with "The Concert for New York City" after the September 11, 2001, attacks, which raised more than $30 million for charity.

He said technological advances over the past decade had exponentially changed the reach of fundraising.

"We have both traditional and new media behind us in a way that we've never had before, and that is really going to be the 'x-factor' on how much money we can raise for the victims," he said.

Donations raised from the concert produced by Clear Channel Entertainment and the Weinstein Co, will go to the Robin Hood Relief Fund, which will provide money and materials to groups helping people hardest hit by the storm.

New Return of the Jedi Images Reveal Lost Female Fighter Pilots

The combined price for Disney?s Marvel acquisition and Lucafilm purchase?totals over $8 billion. Studio executives face a similar hefty payout, assuming they move forward with (for now, rumored) plans to absorb Hasbro next. Obviously, these decisions are motivated by a desire for more profit ? be it in terms of actual movie ticket sales or merchandising tie-ins ? but why, exactly, is Disney gobbling up such properties as The Avengers and?Star Wars in particular?

Well, the company aims to better appeal to the young male demographic ? seeing how it has no problem targeting young girls, thanks to its Princess movie and toy line ? and thus, is busy amassing boy-friendly comic book and/or sci-fi franchises to accomplish that end. Star Wars?is, after all, an essential part of our pop culture heritage, but there?s no denying: in terms of the films? casting, it?s a bit of a boys-only club.

Case in point: rarely-seen photos from Star Wars: Episode VI ? Return of the Jedi have emerged online, revealing what would?ve been the first three female fighter pilots in the franchise?s history. Instead, that honor eventually went to Celia Imrie, who appeared as ?Fighter Pilot Bravo 5? during the space battle climax of Episode I ? The Phantom Menace?- assuming you choose to not count the green-clad female pilot (featured in the galleries above and below), whose voice was dubbed over with a man?s during post-production.

Meanwhile, the other fighters pictured in our galleries (including, French actress Vivienne Chandler) either ended up on the cutting room floor or never made it past the pre-viz stage; that?s despite Chandler?s X-Wing pilot having over a substantial amount of dialogue (supposedly over a page in a certain script draft). It has been speculated they were abandoned over concerns that audiences wouldn?t take well to watching women in serious peril or being blown to smithereens (back in 1983, that is).

CLICK FOR LARGER VERSION

-

Of course, over the three decade that?ve passed since then, female characters are becoming more and more commonplace in the sci-fi ?workplace? ? be it in terms of cult television series (Battlestar Galactica, The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Firefly), film franchises (Resident Evil) or mainstream blockbusters (The Hunger Games). Hence, it?s a great time for Episode VII?screenwriter Michael Arndt?-?and the person who walks away with the Episode VII directing job ? to create some kick-ass female pilots and warriors alike for a new generation of Star Wars fans to enjoy (and older ones too).

It also makes sense from a business perspective, in terms of reaching out more to young women who aren?t Star Wars fans; not to mention, holding onto many who already adore George Lucas? fantastical sci-fi universe. That?s all the more difficult to pull off, when you keep on giving just one female character significant screen time per trilogy (ie. Padme in Episodes I-III, Leia in Episodes IV-VI).

-

You can find out more about the lost female fighter pilots in Return of the Jedi by checking out the Star Wars ?Original Trilogy? Blu-ray.

Meanwhile, Star Wars: Episode VII is arriving Summer 2015.

Venezuela: doctors optimistic about Chavez surgery

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez was preparing to undergo a new cancer surgery on Tuesday in Cuba, his government said, after his illness reappeared despite a year and a half of surgeries and treatments.

Venezuela's government said in a statement that Chavez's medical team had begun "pre-operative protocol" to carry out the surgery on Tuesday.

"His medical team has transmitted its optimism about the success of this operation," the government said in the statement, which Information Minister Ernesto Villegas read on television.

He said the government called on Venezuelans to "remain united in prayer."

Venezuela released the statement after Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa said Chavez was undergoing the operation "at this moment."

"It's a very delicate operation," Correa said at an event in the Ecuadorean city of Tulcan.

"He's passing through one of the hardest moments of his life. Our heart and our solidarity are with a historic president," he said. Correa, a close ally of the socialist leader, traveled to Cuba on Monday to meet with Chavez.

The Venezuelan president announced on Saturday that he needed to undergo a fourth cancer-related surgery after tests showed that "some malignant cells" had reappeared in the same area in his pelvic region where tumors were previously removed.

Chavez also said for the first time that if his illness cuts short his presidency, Vice President Nicolas Maduro should take his place and be elected president to continue on with his leftist movement.

In recent days, groups of supporters have gathered to pray for Chavez in Venezuela and elsewhere. In Bolivia, American actor Sean Penn joined a candlelight vigil on Monday wearing a track suit emblazoned with the colors of Venezuela's flag, just like one that Chavez has worn.

"He is one of the most important forces we've had on this planet. And I will wish him nothing but that great strength he has shown over and over again," Penn told a crowd at the vigil, his voice quavering with emotion.

Penn called Chavez "inspiring."

Chavez first announced he had been diagnosed with cancer in June 2011. He underwent a surgery for a pelvic abscess, and then had a baseball-sized tumor removed from his pelvic area. In February, he underwent another surgery when a tumor reappeared in the same area.

He has also undergone months of chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Throughout his treatments in Cuba, Chavez has kept secret some details of his illness, including the exact location and type of the tumors.

Chavez had previously said in July that tests showed he was cancer-free, and he was re-elected in October to another six-year term. He said over the weekend that recent tests in Cuba had again found cancerous cells.

Real Estate in Cuba: Buying and Selling Without Realtors or the ...

?

Try to imagine a real estate market without real estate brokerages or an MLS. It would be like the Wild West all over again with no restrictions, no law, and no way to determine what your real estate is really worth. Welcome to the real estate market in Cuba.

?

I was reading an article in the November issue of National Geographic when I stumbled upon a photo of how real estate is bought and sold in Cuba. The photo showed a group of people gathered around a tree with signs pinned to it, some of them holding their own signs. The caption read, ?For the first time in decades, Cubans are able to buy and sell real estate. The make-shift real estate signage has converted the park into a bazaar of free market real estate.?

?

The government essentially legalized the real estate marketplace in Cuba last November, and since then, there has been a frenzy of activity among buyers and sellers. Cubans are restricted to selling real estate only to citizens that live in Cuba, or to permanent residents of the island. But without any real estate brokerages or a MLS, it has been difficult to create a level playing field. There are real estate agents on every corner, but none of them has a legal presence or license. And without a way to value property in Cuba, buyers and sellers have no idea what the value of the real estate is.

?

In the U.S., the real estate market is a complex and sophisticated web of infinite information, and is also highly regulated. For those that work in the real estate industry in the U.S., it is difficult to imagine life without an MLS or licensed agents. In Cuba, the freedom to buy and sell property is so new to the Country and its citizens, that there are essentially no rules.

?

Without an organized listing service and licensed brokerages to regulate the real estate market, Cubans have invented their own methods for buying and selling real estate. Some people will stand for hours in the local park or on a street corner holding a hand-written real estate sign. Others will simply nail a rudimentary real estate sign to a tree or a signpost in the City, or hire young children to pass out hand-written flyers.

?

Take a moment to imagine a life in real estate without fancy signage, licensed agents, or a formal marketplace to buy and sell. This is the reality of real estate in Cuba today.

At least six tornadoes ripped through four southern states Monday evening, blowing over gas pumps and destroying homes.

The hardest hit areas by the unusual December tornadoes were in Florida and Alabama.?

In Edgewater, Fla., 40 homes were damaged and 12 completely destroyed. There were two people with minor injuries but no deaths, the Edgewater Fire Department reported. Most of the damage was inside Terra Mar Village, a mobile home community.

Wind from the tornado blew through the?firehouse?s?back doors and blew out the front of the building.?Inmates were sent out by the sheriff's office to help clean up the wreckage.

In Alabama, there were no reported injuries or deaths, the Birmingham Fire Department reported, but a gas station off I-165 had its pumps blown over.?

The Weather Channel reported widespread tree damage and structural damages to buildings in other areas of Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama. ?

The forecast for Tuesday calls for a slight risk of tornadoes in areas stretching from Daytona Beach to Fort Meyers, Fla. Damaging winds, spotty hail and three to four inches of rainfall are expected.

Are moves to add jobs to US factory floors a harbinger, or outliers?

Apple, Lenovo, LG Chem, and now Daimler AG have all recently said they plan to add manufacturing jobs in the US. President Obama hopes it's a sign of the times, but economists say it's, at best, a nascent trend.

By Mark Guarino,?Staff writer / December 10, 2012

President Obama watches a worker during a visit to the heavy duty engines line at the Daimler Detroit Diesel plant in Redford, Mich., Monday, Dec. 10. Detroit Diesel Corp., which makes heavy-duty diesel powertrains for the commercial truck market, said it would expand its line of transmissions and turbo chargers ? investing $128 million and adding jobs to its Detroit-area plant.

Recent days have produced a steady drip, drip, drip of good tidings about new jobs on America's factory floors.?

Last week, Apple said it is investing $100 million to create new manufacturing jobs in the US, following similar announcements by fellow-electronics makers Hewlett-Packard and Levono Group and battery company LG Chem. On Monday, with President Obama in attendance, Detroit Diesel Corp., which makes heavy-duty diesel powertrains for the commercial truck market, said it would expand its line of transmissions and turbo chargers ? investing $128 million and adding jobs to its Detroit-area plant.?

?That means more work. That means more jobs and more products stamped with the stamp ?Made in America,? ? Mr. Obama said at the Detroit Diesel plant, which is owned by?German conglomerate Daimler AG.

This is good news for the communities where the jobs are incoming, but economists caution that manufacturing is not likely to rebound to levels of 20 years ago ? at least not anytime soon.?

In remarks to Bloomberg News last week, Michael Marks, former CEO of Flextronics International Ltd., the second-largest electronics manufacturer in the world, said the Apple announcement represented ?a trend that will start in little ways ? and will pick up steam as suppliers move here. But this does not herald a booming return of high-volume manufacturing to the United States.?

Still, there are some encouraging signs. Since January 2010, the US has gained 496,000 manufacturing jobs, according to data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. That's fewer than one-quarter of the 2.3 million jobs the manufacturing sector lost during the Great Recession, which officially ended in June 2009. Manufacturing employment has remained relatively stable since last spring, according to a new BLS report, released Friday. While the food and chemical manufacturing sectors experienced losses, they were offset by job gains in motor vehicles and parts and wood products.

High fuel and energy costs worldwide, increased consumer and government scrutiny, the declining value of the US dollar relative to other currencies, and rising labor costs abroad are collectively making it more expensive for companies to outsource manufacturing, a point Obama emphasized at Detroit Diesel on Monday.?

?When you factor in everything, it makes sense to invest right here, in America,? he said.

Dutchman launches life-sized replica of Noah's Ark

DORDRECHT, Netherlands (AP) ? A full-scale replica of Noah's Ark has opened its doors to the public in the Netherlands.

Stormy weather Monday could do nothing to dampen the good mood of its creator, Dutchman Johan Huibers. In fact, the rain was appropriate.

In the Biblical story, God orders Noah to build a boat big enough to save animals and Noah's family while Earth is covered in an enormous flood.

Johan interpreted the description given in Genesis to build his ark. It measures in at a whopping 130 meters (427 feet) long, 29 meters (95 feet) across and 23 meters (75 feet) high.

Huibers says he realized a 20-year dream to educate people about history and faith. The ark has received permission to receive up to 3,000 visitors a day.

Why Heartburn Is Such A Problem For So Many People | Daily World ...

scp.bfreesystem.com click here Learn More scp.igetpaidtodrinkcoffee.com

All you have to do is turn on your TV set and before long you will be hit by one heartburn commercial after another. Some of these products are over-the-counter solutions and others are available only by prescription. All promise near miraculous results. But?if they really worked there would not be a heartburn epidemic. One is left to wonder why heartburn is such a tremendous problem and why it continues to affect more and more people.

Yes, I used the word ?epidemic? to describe the heartburn problem. Actually?the more accurate term should be ?pandemic? because it is more than a just a U.S. problem.

So how big is the heartburn problem? According to the Surgeon General?s Report on Nutrition and Health, digestive problems are the top health concern in North America. Compare this finding with the fact that a century ago the digestive problems that we experience today didn?t even exist. Digestive problems are the number one cause of hospitalization, surgery, and disability in the United States affecting some 65 million Americans.

Wow. The number 1 health problem and there is a ton of money being thrown at it. It is estimated that in untreated individuals, the cost of heartburn is considered to be over $10,000 a year in terms of lost quality of life. Some premium heartburn prescriptions can cost the uninsured almost $2,500 a year, leading to an out-of-pocket burden of over $50,000 over a 20-year period. Furthermore, American businesses lose about $100 billion per year on lost productivity because workers aren?t performing due to lost sleep due to nighttime heartburn.

Let?s face it. Heartburn is big business. So there is little likelihood that heartburn will be eradicated. Why? Because curing it would shut down a multi-billion dollar industry. So the best we can hope for is relieving and controlling the problem. I know that sounds like gloom and doom but that?s the way it is.

Heartburn has become a massive problem because of our modern lifestyle and diet. We overeat?and what we do eat fuels the problem. We are obese, fail to get adequate exercise, and consume chemicals to solve our physical and emotional problems.

When your problem escalates to the point that you have to get a doctor involved there are some very effective drugs for treating the problem. However, when prescribing the medication your doctor will also give you a speech about the need for a change in lifestyle and diet?which reflects directly back on the heart of the problem. ?Lose weight, get exercise, and change your diet. Eliminate greasy, fatty, and spicy foods. Avoid chocolate, caffeine, and alcohol.? Listen closely?because those words not only address what needs to be done to get heartburn and its related symptoms under control?they are also words that clearly tell us how heartburn got to be such a serious problem.

It is easy to see why heartburn affects so many people and it is equally easy to figure out what needs to be done to fix the problem. Unfortunately, we really don?t want to do what is necessary to make it right. But?the answer is there if we really want it.

Richard Weirich co-hosts the internationally popular Health at Last Radio Show and has written numerous publications on heartburn, acid reflux, weight loss, health, and wellness. Learn more information on why heartburn is a problem at http://www.heartburnadviser.com .

How Does a Spectrograph Work? [Infographic]

spectrograph, how does a spectrograph work, rainbow spectrum Image: Illustration by George Retseck

A spectrograph splits light into its component wavelengths. First, light travels from a telescope through a small opening in the spectrograph to a collimating mirror that lines up all entering rays of light parallel to one another before they reach a finely scored plate of glass known as a diffraction grating. When light passes through or bounces off this glass grating, its many constituent wavelengths each change speed and direction according to their spectral color. The grating bends red light in a different way from orange light, which bends a little differently from yellow light and so on, spreading the many wavelengths into a rainbow spectrum. Rotating the diffraction grating controls which wavelengths of light reach another mirror, which in turn focuses these wavelengths onto a photodetector, such as a charge-coupled device. The detector converts photons into electrical signals that a computer interprets to measure the strength of different wavelengths.

(AP) ? Egypt's political crisis spiraled deeper into bitterness and recrimination Friday as thousands of Islamist backers of the president vowed vengeance at a funeral for two men killed in bloody clashes earlier this week and large crowds of the president's opponents marched on his palace to increase pressure after he rejected their demands.

The two camps in the country's divide appeared at a deadlock, after President Mohammed Morsi gave a fiery televised speech Thursday night denouncing his opponents and refusing to call off a referendum on a draft constitution promulgated by his allies, even as he appealed for dialogue. The opposition rejected talks, saying he must first cancel the referendum and meet other demands.

With Egypt's crisis now in its third week, anger was mounting in the streets, after the two camps clashed Wednesday in heavy battles outside the presidential palace that left six dead and more than 700 injured.

Each side is depicting the conflict as an all-out fight for Egypt's future. The opposition accuses Morsi and his Islamist allies of turning increasingly dictatorial to force their agenda on the country and monopolize power. The Muslim Brotherhood, from which Morsi hails, and other Islamists say the opposition is trying to use the streets to overturn their victories in elections over the past year.

The tone was one of a battle cry as thousands of Islamists held funeral prayers Friday at Al-Azhar Mosque ? the country's premier Islamic institution ? for two Morsi supporters killed in Wednesday's clashes. Seeking to rally their side, a series of speakers to the crowd portrayed the opposition as tools of the regime of ousted leader Hosni Mubarak ? or as decadent and un-Islamic ? and vowed to defend a constitution they say brings Islamic law to Egypt.

"Egypt is Islamic, it will not be secular, it will not be liberal," the crowd chanted in a funeral procession filling streets around the mosque. During the funeral, thousands chanted, "With blood and soul, we redeem Islam," pumping their fists in the air. Mourners yelled that opposition leaders were "murderers."

One hardline cleric speaking to the crowd denounced anti-Morsi protesters as "traitors." Another declared that they will not allow Egypt to become "a den of hash smokers."

"We march on this path in sacrifice for the nation and our martyrs," a leading Brotherhood figure, Mohammed el-Beltagi, told the crowd. "We will keep going even if we all become martyrs. We will avenge them or die like them.

"Bread! Freedom! Islamic Law!" the crowd chanted, twisting the revolutionary slogan of "Bread! Freedom! Social Justice!" used by leftists and secular activists in the 2011 uprising against Mubarak.

At the same time, thousands of protesters against Morsi streamed in several marches from different parts of Cairo toward his presidential palace in an upscale neighborhood for a third straight day. Many were furious over the president's speech the night before in which he accused "hired thugs" of attacking protesters outside the palace Wednesday, sparking the clashes. Most witnesses say the clashes began with Morsi supporters attacked a tent camp set up by anti-Morsi protesters.

At the rings of barbed wire outside the palace, protesters chanted, "Leave, leave," and "the people want the fall of the regime." Egypt's military intervened on Thursday for the first time, posting tanks around the palace and stringing barbed wire. Morsi attended weekly Friday prayers at the Republican Guards' mosque near the palace ? after he was denounced by worshippers last week at a mosque near his home in a Cairo suburb where he often prays.

The National Salvation Front, the main opposition umbrella group, blasted Morsi's speech, saying he was "surprisingly in denial to facts that millions of people in Egypt and around the world have seen" ? that the violence Wednesday came from "clear and blatant instigation by leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood, from which the president hails."

In a statement Friday, the group repeated its rejection of Morsi's call for dialogue saying he must first meet their demands. The opposition says Morsi must rescind decrees he issued last month giving himself sweeping powers and neutralizing the judiciary and cancel the planned Dec. 15 referendum on the draft constitution.

"After the bloodshed, we will not put our hands in the hands of those who killed new martyrs," Hamdeen Sabahi, a leading figure in the National Salvation Front, told protesters gathered Friday in central Tahrir Square.

The April 6 movement, which played a key role in sparking the uprising against Mubarak, called its supporters to gather at mosques in Cairo and the neighboring city of Giza to march to the palace. They termed Friday's march a "red card" for Morsi, a reference to a football referee sending a player off the field for a serious violation.

Rival protests also took place in cities around the country, including in the cities of Alexandria on the Mediterranean coast and Luxor in the south. The two sides pelted each other with stones outside the headquarters of the Brotherhood office in Nile Delta city of Kom Hamada, in the province of Beheira. In the Delta industrial city of Mahallah, protesters cut railroads stopping trains and announcing a sit in until cancelation of Morsi's decrees and the referendum.

In the southern city of Assiut, hundreds of protesters marched chanting, "Down with the rule of the General Guide," referring to the head of the Muslim Brotherhood. "No Brotherhood, no Salafis, Egypt is a civic state," they said. Mohammed Abdel Ellah one of the protests' coordinators said that the secular groups are organizing street campaigns against the draft constitution to get the public to vote "no" if it comes to a referendum.

"We explain the draft to the people so they won't be fooled in the poison in honey," he said.

At the same time, Muslim preachers in Assiut mosques called on worshippers to support Morsi. One cleric in the nearby village of Qussiya denounced the opposition as "those with wicked hearts" and "enemies of God's rule."

"The enemies of the president are enemies of God, Shariah and legitimacy" another preachers said, adding that it is prohibited to protest against the ruler.

Morsi has been hit by a string of resignations by some of his top aides protesting the week's violence. Criticism is also growing from Egyptian journalists, including those working for state-run news organizations, over what they say are attempts by Islamists to control the media.

The head of state television resigned in objection to official coverage of the crisis. On Thursday, dozens of Egyptian journalists from the state-run Al-Ahram daily protested in front of the paper's headquarters denouncing the editorial policy of the paper. The paper had been seen as the mouthpiece under Mubarak's rule.

Also on Thursday, prominent television presenter Khairy Ramadan resigned on air after the private network he works for banned Sabahi from appearing on air for an interview. The TV network is owned by a businessman who was believed to be linked to old regime.
